It’s only been two weeks since Justify snatched victory in the 2018 Kentucky Derby but can the colt now continue its winning ways as the second leg of the US Triple Crown is run this weekend? The Preakness Stakes betting odds seem to confirm bookies like Bovada think he can, but with several other horses, including second place Good Magic, there too is this in the bag for the three year-old or is it still up for grabs? We take a look.

  • Can Justify win the second leg of the US Triple Crown?
  • Could Good Magic get revenge for 2nd place at the Kentucky Derby?
  • Is Bravazo worth an each-way wager at Pimlico this Saturday?
  • Does Diamond King and it’s fresh legs warrant a place bet?

The Supreme Court ruling that US gambling laws are best decided by individual states if Congress can’t be bothered to install decent and sensible federal legislation has given many a sports betting fans hope this week and to celebrate I suspect more than a few of them will be off the races this weekend to do some Preakness Stakes betting, and why not? The second race in the US Triple Crown always attracts massive crowds to Baltimore and the Pimlico Race Course and this year will be no different.

The tradition of the Kentucky Derby winner, and several other horses from the race turning up to run at the Preakness Stakes betting a second bite of the cherry might yield them a better result, has been around almost since the first year it was run back in 1873 and along with the Belmont Stakes has become the Orion’s Belt of US horse racing, but which horses have made the trip and which should you back at Bovada this Saturday? Well there’s plenty to choose from so let’s take a look at the rundown.

Can Kentucky Derby Winner Justify Do It Again?

Well for those of you who enjoy a bet on sports in the US we’ll start by looking at the Preakness Stakes betting long shots, those horses making up the field but as likely to graze on it than make any sort of running. Pony Up, Noble Indy and Givemeaminit all get 33/1, although only Noble Indy ran in the Derby, and that 17th place finish doesn’t give it a lot of hope here. At 25/1 we have Tenfold and Lone Sailor, the latter of which came in 8th in Kentucky and could be worth an eachway bet.

Sporting Chance gets 22/1 at Bovada despite probably not having one at all, and Telekinesis gets 20/1 alongside Bravazo who managed a very creditable 6th place in the Derby and could just sneak a top three finish and thus might be worth being part of your Preakness Stakes betting regime this weekend. It’s the Diamond King and Quip who get 16/1, probably because neither one ran a top tier race two weeks ago, and whilst you can barely split them it’s the former that should attract more backers.

  • Pony Up – 33/1
  • Givemeaminit – 33/1
  • Noble Indy – 33/1
  • Lone Sailor – 25/1
  • Tenfold – 25/1
  • Sporting Chance – 22/1
  • Telekinesis – 20/1
  • Bravazo – 20/1
  • Quip – 16/1
  • Diamond King – 16/1
  • Good Magic – 7/2
  • Justify – 2/5

Of course the US gambling news headline writers (still getting over that Supreme Court decision) will be focusing their attention on the two favorites in the Preakness Stakes betting odds hierarchy both of which were at the Kentucky Derby and, naturally, came first and second. Good Magic ran a good race and whilst Bovada gives the Chad Brown trained mount ridden by Jose Ortiz just 7/2 it’s bound to be one of the more heavily backed horses on the course this Saturday, with only Justify getting more.

Justify is a Bob Baffert horse which means it probably has “winner” written through it like a stick of rock and with the massive experience of Mike Smith at the reins you have to suspect you’re seeing a Triple Crown winner in action and that those 2/5 odds Bovada is offering are an accurate reflection of its chances. It’s the favorite for a reason and if you’re planning on doing as spot of Preakness Stakes betting this weekend there’s probably no reason to look beyond this magnificent animal for your wager.
