Government of Ireland has made an iconic move on International Women’s Day, by introducing a bill to hold referendum concerned with abortion laws. The 8th amendment referendum odds are available now on a voting likely to be held in late of May.

The cabinet unanimously approved a bill on Thursday March 08, allowing the long-anticipated referendum to go ahead. According to online sportsbook news in Ireland the voters will be asked if they want to repeal article 40.3.3 – known as the eighth amendment – which since 1983 has given unborn fetuses and pregnant women an equal right to life, effectively enshrining a ban on abortion in the country’s constitution. The 8th amendment referendum odds at online betting sites in Ireland suggest majority of Irish people to vote in favor of the repeal.

The bill will have a large impact on Women’s rights

In Ireland nowadays terminations are only allowed when the life of the mother is at risk, and the maximum penalty for accessing an illegal abortion is 14 years in prison. For those Irish women who had terminations are estimated to 170,000 since 1983, but all of them did such abroad, in meantime each year in Ireland there are around 2,000 women who take illegally abortion pills.

If Ireland votes in favor of repeal as suggested by 8th amendment referendum odds, the abortion laws are expected to change into permitting unrestricted abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, recognizing the ability of women and mothers to make decisions for themselves and putting great responsibility on advancing the healthcare system in the country.

The debate already started at the lower house and it will continue until the introduction of final wording that will be put to the people. The government strongly supports repealing the Eighth Amendment considering the current law under enforcement as neglectful towards women in times of crisis. In the same vein, Amnesty International has welcomed the bill saying it is a historic milestone towards women’s equality in Ireland. But there is a strong opposition stated by the Catholic Church on the bill as standing against the right of life, which is the fundamental human right.
