Premier League side Newcastle United could soon see a change in ownership, if the proposed £300m bid tabled by Amanda Staveley – a popular businesswoman in sports – goes through.

If current owner Mike Ashley were to sell the club, it could potentially see the Magpies armed with bigger transfer budgets in the future.

Takeover imminent?

According to The Guardian, Staveley tabled an initial bid of £250m for the North East side, however Ashley turned it down, believing it to have a valuation closer to around £400m. Should he accept Staveley’s improved bid of £300m, it would bring an end to his decade-long ownership of the club, having purchased it in May 2007 for around £135m.

However, with Newcastle’s disappointing performance on the pitch this season could be a stumbling block to finalizing the deal. The Magpies are one of the favourites to be relegated to the Championship next campaign with their odds being 9/4 (3.25), per online sportsbooks in UK. It is rumoured, Staveley wants to insert a clause in the contract that would see her pay considerably less for the club, in case they are relegated to England’s second tier of football.

Staveley’s ownership would help the club’s coffers just in time for the winter transfer window, as they are in dire need to strengthen their squad if they are to remain in the Premier League beyond this season.

Who is Amanda Staveley?

Staveley has been plying her trade in the business world for quite some time, having successfully managed several establishments throughout her young career, considering she was born in 1973. When the Abu Dhabi United Group (ADUG) were circling around Manchester City in 2008, Staveley was at the forefront of the group and negotiating the deal.

The takeover granted her a reputation as a serious businesswoman in sports, while also netting her a cool £10m commission for her role in the purchase of Man City. After the purchase was complete, in an interview with The Guardian from 2008, Staveley was noted as remarking that her motivation doesn’t (solely) come from making millions on deals, but that she wants to know that she’s done a proper job.

“It is not about the money – it wouldn’t matter if I was making £8m or £200m. I just want to go to bed at night and say I’ve done a good job,” Staveley said.

Arsenal v Newcastle – H 1/4 (1.25) D 9/2 (5.50) A 11/1 (12.00)

Newcastle will next face Arsenal this weekend at the Emirates Stadium, and their record away from home is far from convincing, with 5 losses, 2 draws and merely 1 victory. The Gunners will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity to seal the all-important 3 points, while the most that the Magpies can hope for is a tie.

Rafael Benitez’s men lost 4 of the last 5 games away from St. James’ Park, so it’s obvious why we’re backing Arsenal to seal an easy victory on Saturday, especially since Arsene Wenger’s side have won 7 of their 8 encounters at the Emirates. Bet on sports in UK this weekend to make a killing!
