Rule changes for the 2015-16 regular season
The 2015-16 NHL regular season is finally here, which means NHL betting can be the regular part of our lives again! Unfortunately US gambling laws don’t permit legal online sports betting for US citizens in every state, but for those, who live in a state with legalized online betting, there is a selection of legal online sportsbooks to choose the best NHL odds in the US.

Canadian citizens are somewhat luckier since Canadian gambling laws are far more permissive towards internet sports betting. However, since the best NHL odds in the US are often pretty much the best you can find amongst internet betting operators around the web, it is encouraging for Canadian players to place wagers at the top US sportsbooks.

2015 Stanley Cup Chicago Blackhawks
Last year’s winners the Blackhawks have a good chance to defend their title

Intertops Sportsbook has excellent odds on the NHL season outright markets and on the NHL game markets as well. You can get the title-defense of the Chicago Blackhawks for 9.00 (8/1) – the best NHL odds in the US betting market –, which is similar to the best offers you would get at online sportsbooks outside the States. The runners-up of the 2015 Stanley Cup final, the Tampa Bay Lightning are available at 11.00 (10/1) on the outright winners market and quite a few other sides were attached to the very same odds as well.

The Anaheim Ducks, the Minnesota Wild, the Montreal Canadiens, the New York Rangers and the St. Louis Blues are also considered amongst the top underdogs to win the 2015-16 NHL season according to the online betting odds of Intertops. Pittsburgh Penguins, who nearly always have a shot at the trophy, are very close with internet betting odds of 12.00 (11/1).

2015 finalists are also favorites to win their respective conference

On the East coast, the Tampa Bay Lighning and the New York Rangers have the shortest odds to win the conference. Both of them were handed online betting odds of 6.00 (5/1) to win the Eastern Conference. The Canadiens and the Penguins seem to have a shot at the conference championship as well, since their success is priced at 6.50 (11/2) by Intertops .

Forces on the other side of the Mississippi – alright, Chicago and Nashville are on the wrong side of the river – are less balanced. The Chicago Blackhawks are 4.75 (15/4) favorites to win the Western Conference. Their main challengers could be the Anaheim Ducks for 5.50 (9/2) or the St. Louis Blues for 6.50 (11/2). 2014 champions, the Los Angeles Kings are available at 9.00 (8/1) to win the conference.

What are the new NHL rules before the 2015-16 season?

A new season brings a few rule changes as well. The most important NHL rule change before the 2015-16 regular season is the 3-on-3 overtime rule. Since the 1999-2000 regular season, the NHL reduced the number of outfield skaters from 5 to 4 before the overtime in regular season games. Now there will be only three skaters on each team – if there are no penalties carried from the regulations – to help decide the games earlier and to further decrease the number of shootouts.

Rule changes will surely be shocking at first

The introduction of the coach challenge is also a very important NHL rule change. This will be similar to what is used in the NFL: the coach will have to use a time-out to call for a challenge, which will be restored if the challenge was won. Only certain situations resulting in a goal or a disallowed goal could be the subject of the coach’s challenge. Controversial situations in the final minute of the regulation will be reviewed automatically from the Toronto NHL Situation Room.

There is a new faceoff rule as well. From the start of the 2015-16 NHL regular season, at faceoffs, the defensive player has to put down his stick first on the ice – and the visiting player at center-ice faceoffs. Before this NHL rule change, always the visiting player was ordered to put his stick on the ice first. NHL experts foresee more goals and most importantly, more goals from away teams from this rule change, which can be beneficial for mobile betting players.
