2017 had a lot of unexpected results in women’s tennis. Predicting this year’s outcome is not easy, either. The Grand Slam events are no exception, and the accuracy of the betting odds of the 2018 US Open Women’s Singles that have appeared on online sportsbook sites in the UK are up for debate.

Our list of the likeliest players to win the US Open certainly looks a bit different. Here are the 5 best athletes in ascending order (their betting odds are from Unibet Sportsbook).

5. Karolína Plíšková (11/1)

Betting on Karolína Plíšková may be less risky than the multiplier indicates because the young Czech athlete is the definitive up-and-coming talent of tennis. Following her breakthrough year in 2014, it took her only until 2017 to be ranked WTA world no. 1 despite not having won a Grand Slam tournament.

Currently ranked no. 6, she has set out to reclaim her no 1. position with a Grand Slam trophy by a recent change of coaches. This, coupled with her aggressive playing style that focuses on extracting errors from her opponents, could make the difference this year.

If she is to win a Grand Slam trophy, it will probably be the US Open because hard courts seem to be her element. Also, she reached her best Grand Slam result at the 2016 US Open, where she secured the second spot. The US Open definitely appears to be the most Plíšková-compatible Grand Slam event.

4. Elina Svitolina (9/1)

Having improved her serve in the 2016 season and changing coaches multiple times the same year to find the best one, Svitolina is getting more and more threatening. However, her odds for the US Open are somewhat damaged by her preference for grass and clay courts.Nevertheless, she seems to be strong in 2018, having already won the Brisbane International Title. She definitely has what it takes to add a US Open trophy to her collection.

3. Simona Halep (8/1)

The current WTA no. 1, she has earned high rankings by a steady improvement. Like Plíšková, she has reached the no. 1 position without winning a Grand Slam title. Losing at the 2017 US Open in the first round, performing better on this year’s tournament will inevitably be one of her priorities.

Simona Halep

She started 2018 convincingly, winning the Shenzhen Open and reaching the finals of the Australian Open. However, she was defeated there by Wozniacki, whose chances online betting sites in the UK consider lower than Halep’s. We beg to differ.

2. Caroline Wozniacki (13/1)

Underperforming in 2012-2013 and 2015, Wozniacki seems to have found her way back to a consistent top form by now. Her recent wins include the Pan Pacific Open and the WTA Finals, both in the Fall of 2017. These triumphs, coupled with her victory at the 2018 Australian Open (the latest Grand Slam event), gives her better chances for the US Open than the multiplier given by online sportsbooks in the UK suggests.

She even stole the WTA no. 1 position from Simona Halep at the beginning of this year. Even if Halep reclaimed it four weeks later, if they were to play the finals at the US Open, Wozniacki would be at an advantage, as she has won 5 of the 7 matches they played so far. In fact, we feel there is only one player who might have better chances than Wozniacki.

1. Serena Williams (33/10)

Seen as the greatest female tennis player of all time by a number of experts, Serena Williams is the absolute favourite of the bookies. She indeed has a good shot at the US Open despite the fact that out of the four types of Grand Slam titles, her US Open trophy happens to be the oldest one (2014). The true question is not her history of US Open wins but how well her body adjusts back to professional sports after giving birth.

Serena Williams

So far, things haven’t been smooth. She had suffered a pulmonary embolism following the birth of her daughter, which ruined her plans of competing in the 2018 Australian Open. Since then, she has overcome the problems pregnancy caused her, but is still not in top form. This could be witnessed in the 2018 Fed Cup, where she and her sister lost to Lesley Kerkhove and Demi Schuurs.

Still, Williams has proven many times that she is a fighter. Time is also on her side: September is four and a half months away. That could be enough for her to prepare and emerge victorious.
