According to the press release of the Australian Communications and Media Authority, rules for gambling advertisements on television will be considerably stricter from the 30th of March.

Starting from March 30, gambling ads will be banned from Australian broadcasts – including TV, radio, and even pay TV – between 5:00 AM and 8:30 PM. The new rules advertising rules were drafted in order to protect children from exposure to gambling. From 30 March, parents and carers can have confidence that children will not be exposed to gambling promotions during live sporting events broadcast, said Senator Mitch Fifield, Minister for Communications and the Arts.

If everything goes as planned, there will be no need to alter Australian gambling laws in order to regulate advertising. The Authority will monitor the broadcasts and they might review the rules effectiveness after a year. The same press release mentions similar rules for online content service providers. The ACMA will consult with stakeholders about the draft online rules once the required new legislation is passed by Parliament.
