Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made his name in the Bundesliga with Dortmund, and as his goal tally increased considerably year after year so did his conspicuous, playboy lifestyle off the pitch. Now plying his trade at the Emirates, the speedy forward has vowed to keep the same attitude that he’s enjoyed so far, which involves expensive sports cars, designer clothing and the general free lifestyle that high-paid footballers are used to. And why shouldn’t he enjoy the lavish lifestyle? We all probably would, given the chance…

Aubameyang – “you only live once”

“The clothes, the cards and all that are a bonus,” said the 28-year-old, before stressing that he doesn’t spend too much thinking about whether this bothers other people. “I enjoy living this way. I like who I am and it doesn’t matter if other people can’t accept that – it goes over my head. As they say ‘you only live once.’ It’s important to know where you come from and where your roots are – the rest is a big bonus.”

According to online sportsbook news, Arsenal paid Dortmund around £56m to acquire the services of the striker – a record for the Gunners – and have agreed to pay him somewhere in the region of £180,000 per week (this amounts to £9.36m annually). If any of us mortals were to be making this much, we’d probably also buy ourselves some nice things. I know I’d buy myself things like slippers made out of 24k gold thread, the throne from the Game of Thrones series just to boost my ego and also perhaps get myself a tiger that’s one the verge of extinction. You know, just the usual stuff when you’re collecting nearly £200,000 every 7 days.

Aubameyang has come under scrutiny following his big-money switch from the Westfalenstadion to the Emirates; many football observers were expecting him to have an instant impact within the squad, judging by his previous performances in the Bundesliga over the last four-and-a-half seasons. In three games for Arsenal so far, the striker has bagged only 1 goal and that has come in the Premier League, but it’s obvious that every new player that joins the top flight of English football needs time to adjust, no matter how hefty is price tag is.

Arsenal have gotten a proven goalscorer this time

During his time with Dortmund, Aubameyang has bagged an incredible 141 goals in 213 appearances across all competitions. The 2016/17 campaign proved to be his most prolific season, as he managed to find the back of the net an incredible 31 times in Bundesliga – outscoring his Bayern counterpart Lewandowski – while overall in 36 games he scored a remarkable 40 goals. Thanks to his exploits in front of goal that season, the Gabon international got awarded the Bundesliga Top Goalscorer award with his tally of 31 goals.

But despite him netting 21 goals before leaving Dortmund mid-way through this campaign, the chief executive of the German club, Hans-Joachim Watzke, claimed Aubameyang was “withholding performances” in efforts to push his way through out of the club. His new boss Arsene Wenger quickly came to his defence, believing that Aubameyang gave his all to his former club before deciding to leave for the North London club, per online sportsbooks in UK.

“One before the (winter) break and one after the break,” said Wenger. “So he played only one game at home, where they played a 2-2 against (Freiburg). So maybe he was not ready to perform at his best, but I don’t believe that he didn’t want to perform.”
