In Canelo absence, all boxing fans must be very disappointed to see Golovkin-Alvarez rematch on 5 May being canceled. But we still have the opportunity to enjoy a show by the power-punching Golovkin, though in a less exciting bout. Here’s our Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan boxing preview.

At the beginning of 2018, online sportsbook news in the United States were massively covering the preparations for the middleweight boxing fight of the year, featuring Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez rematch of their September blockbuster, which ended in a controversial draw. Yet, just two weeks ahead of the fight, an announcement came out banning Mexico’s Alvarez for six months after testing positive twice for the performance-enhancing substance Clenbuterol in February. Golovkin’s team was forced to scramble to find a replacement opponent. The best match up they found is a low-risk fight according to our Gennady Golovkin vs. Vanes Martirosyan boxing preview.

Who is Vanes Martirosyan?

2004 US Olympian Vanes Martirosyan holds a record of (36-3-1, 23 KOs). Although he is the World Boxing Council’s No. 1 ranked light-middleweight contender, Martirosyan did not fight since May 2016. He challenged twice for world championships but lost on points both times, to Demetrius Andrade in 2013 and Erislandy Lara in 2016. So this fight will be his new world title shot against the unbeaten WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight champion. Could Martirosyan show greater potentials after two years of training?

The Kazakh knockout artist Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) is due to take in Martirosyan at the same date of 5 May but at the StubHub Center in California rather than T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where he was supposed to meet with Alvarez. Internet sites in the United States expect Golovkin to have a walkover against a fighter who lost his last outing, and who has never fought about middleweight professionally. Perhaps the fight will look like Martirosyan to bother Golovkin a bit with his craft, then the Triple-G turns to hunt his challenger down and ultimately breaks him with a knockout.

What are the odds?

It seems relatively difficult to find many online betting sites in the United States offering odds on the fight, perhaps because it was just announced, or because it’s hard to imagine any other outcome than a knockout for Golovkin. Thus Bet365 Sportsbook offers low-profit odds for Golovkin as the ultimate winner with (1.030), while the odds are (11.00) for his contender who is likely to lose his title shot.
