We’ve seen a number of great upsets take place this year, but in this article we’ll take a look at the biggest MMA betting upsets in the history of the sport.

Perhaps the most exciting aspect of MMA is its unpredictability. At any given time during a match, either fighter can win with a single blow. Since the UFC’s creation in 1993, we’ve seen a number of terrific upsets take place, some of which made a massive impact on the sport's history.

In this article we’ll take a look at a few of the biggest MMA betting upsets in history, and discuss what odds many online sportsbooks in the UK listed for these fights.

Matt Serra vs. George St. Pierre: 2007

From early 2005 to mid 2007, George St. Pierre established himself as the best welterweight on the planet. He had bounced back from a loss to Matt Hughes in his first championship fight to rack off 6 straight wins including a victory in the rematch against Hughes. In April of 2007, GSP was scheduled to take on Ultimate Fighter winner Matt Serra.

  • Frankie Edgar vs. Max Holloway
Serra was a former lightweight title contender who managed to defeat three fighters at 170 pounds to earn the Ultimate Fighter season 4 trophy and a welterweight title fight. Nearly every single MMA sports betting site listed Serra as an absolutely massive betting underdog with odds to win as low as 7/1.

Despite nearly every MMA betting expert writing him off, Serra shocked the world by stopping GSP by TKO just 3 minutes and 25 seconds into the first round. The loss would go down as one of the biggest MMA betting upsets of all time, and today is only one of GSP’s two career losses.

Holly Holm vs. Ronda Rousey: 2015

Around the beginning of 2013, something incredible happened in the UFC… A female fighter was becoming the biggest star in the sport. Ronda Rousey single handily put WMMA on the map and quickly earned a massive fan base thanks to her colorful personality and penchant for finishing fights in the first round.

Rousey won her first six fights in the UFC, defending her belt on each occasion before being matched up with Holly Holm. A multiple-time boxing champion, Holm was seen as a dangerous opponent but most sites including Paddy Power Sportsbook listed her as a serious longshot to get the win over Rousey with odds of 7/1.

As soon as the fight began however, it became clear that Holm was not going to back down. She landed numerous hard punches throughout the first round and made UK gambling news by knocking out Ronda with a head kick in round 2. Since that time, the women’s bantamweight champion has changed hands 3 times.

Michael Bisping vs. Luke Rockhold: 2016

The UFC’s middleweight championship changed hands numerous times over the past several years. Many analysts felt that Luke Rockhold would be a longtime champ after he won the belt against Chris Weidman in late 2015, and his first title defense was set to come against Michael Bisping, whom he had beaten previously on his journey to the belt.

Bisping wasn’t fazed by that loss and told the media he planned to finish Rockhold in the first round. Still, Mike was a massive underdog with odds of 6/1 to win.

In one of the biggest MMA betting upsets of all time, Bisping knocked out Rockhold in the first round as he predicted and remains champion to this day.
