Last Week in Pictures: March 26 - April 01

Last week was chockablock with big news stories breaking around the world so in case you missed anything important here's a quick look at some of the biggest to make the newspapers.

In the UK and Russia last week tit for tat expulsions continued as the row over who was responsible for the use of a nerve toxin on former Russian spy Sergei Skripal who was attacked along with his daughter in the UK. Allies of the UK also expelled several Russian diplomats prompting the Kremlin to order home 60 US diplomats and the closure of the American consulate in St Petersberg. They also elected to expel diplomats from the various European Union nation who also expelled Russian staff.

In the UK the opposition party leader, Jeremy Corbyn came under increasing pressure last week as charges of antisemitism were leveled against the Labour Party. With large donors pulling away following the scandal and well known celebrities like Eddie Izzard urging Mr Corbyn on to a purge of any elements in the party that could be deemed antisemitic in any way, there was also a call from the former Speaker of the House, Micheal Martin for a conference on the topic to rid the party of it.

In the Holy Land last week Israel troops opened fire on a large group of demonstrators near the frontier with the Gaza Strip killing over a dozen and leaving 1,000 injured. The Israeli defence minister Avigdor Lieberman has said his troops “did what had to be done” prompting both the UN and EU to call for an inquiry into the bloodshed and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan to call Benjamin Netanyahu a “terrorist”. Israel has rejected calls for an investigation into the mass casualty event.

In sports Anthony Joshua came through a scrappy bout against Joseph Parker on points to grab his fourth world title and unify the WBA, IBF, IBO and WBO belts. This leaves just Deontay Wilder and his WBC belt in the way of his being an undisputed world champion, but will the Bronze Bomber take the fight? And if so just when will it happen? You'll have to read our daily news pages to find out but in the meantime here's a look at some of the headlines from around the world we covered last week.

Meanwhile around the world Easter was celebrated by Christians last week, and no one celebrated more than the Pope with his annual service only somewhat overshadowed by Pope Francis claiming hell doesn't exist and that bad souls are not punished. This was a sentiment the Vatican was quick to back pedal away from claiming the pope was misquoted after which the reporter concerned, Eugenio Scalfari, also drew back from his own reporting when the fuss hit the headlines. Divine timing, Eugene.
