Lottomatica and other Italian gambling operators must prepare for change within Italian gambling laws and the respective market. The barriers to entry within the market which held foreign operators at bay were lifted earlier this year to conform to European Union standards. Now the Italian government is preparing to provide licenses to the foreign internet gambling firms. Italian consumers are expected to benefit from increased competition which should be available to Italian gamblers within the first quarter of 2011.

Lottomatica holds the most famous brand within the Italian gambling industry. Over their last twenty years of operation, they have become an international leader amongst gambling firms. Their most prominent service has been running the Italian national lottery, the European mainland’s 3rd biggest gambling market, only exceeded by Germany and France. However, Lottomatica’s services have expanded to include online poker rooms, online bingo halls, and betting on sports in Italy.

Changes to the Italian gambling market may have come earlier, but Microgame S.p.A. (not to be confused with Microgaming Software Systems Ltd), an Italian service provider for internet-based gambling operations, sued the government against plans to modify Italy’s gambling laws. Earlier this month, the Italian court case ended, allowing online gambling plans to proceed.
