The Sky Blues have been crowned Premier League champions after Man United lost at home to West Brom on Sunday afternoon.

Third Premier League title in the modern era

Man City failed to celebrate the long-expected title triumph when they lost to fierce rivals Man United at the Etihad last round, but according to online sportsbooks in UK it was just a matter of time before they clinched the Premier League trophy.

Pep Guardiola’s men defeated Tottenham 3-1 at Wembley on Saturday, which meant they could officially win the title, if second-placed Man United lost their encounter against West Brom at Old Trafford. Despite it being a highly unlikely event, that’s exactly what happened as the Baggies’ striker Jay Rodriguez slotted the only goal of the game past David de Gea 17 minutes before the end of the whistle. In all fairness, it was merely a matter of time before Man City got their hands on the trophy, but Rodriguez’s goal expedited their well-deserved celebrations.

Man City captain Vincent Kompany – who has been with the side since 2008 when Sheikh Mansour took over the club – expressed his joy at clinching his third Premier League title with the Sky Blues. Despite it being a personal achievement yet again for the Belgian and the club itself, Kompany stressed the Premier League trophy is dedicated to the Man City faithful, who have been their 12th man on many occasions throughout the title-winning campaign.

“As much as this has been a record breaking season, this one’s for you, the fans, this is why we do it. Come on City! Champions! I’m buzzing, over the moon, so happy and proud to be able to share this with all our fans, everybody who’s been there to support us especially in this last week as many know it’s been very difficult but at the same time we’ve bounced back., we’re champions now and thank you to all of you. It’s an incredible season,” said the 32-year-old captain.

Success in Europe is the next phase of the plan

It’s actually no surprise that Pep Guardiola’s men have won the league, as they’ve been the favourites to do so by providers of internet betting in UK since the very start of the campaign. For the following season, we’re pretty sure Man City will only get stronger, so they are likely to be favourites yet again, per Bet365 Sportsbook.

Overall, the latest title triumph brings Man City’s domestic trophy haul to 5 league titles – 3 Premier League wins (2012, 2014 and 2018) and 2 First Division crowns (1937 and 1968). They’ve also won other kinds of silverware – most notably since 2008 – but the most coveted trophy is eluding them, with that being the Champions League title.

The 2018/19 season will mark Guardiola’s third year with the club, which means that the evolution of the squad could be reaching a level of maturity that could see them to go out and conquer Europe, after having won the biggest trophy in England.
