PokerStars withdraws from Romania to apply for a license that meets all the requirements of the new Romanian gambling law.

PokerStars left the Romanian gambling market in order to comply with the newly introduced Romanian gambling laws. From August 10th the renowned online poker operator’s affiliate program does no longer accept players from Romania. However, in a statement the company confirmed that they’re applying for a new license in order to provide “a fun, safe and competitive environment for Romanian consumers to enjoy online poker.”

The new gambling laws in Romania were crafted in order to attract more international online casino operators, therefore to raise the country’s tax revenues. A need for change emerged after the complaints of the EU Commission concerning the fact that foreign companies were unable to acquire licenses.

The new Romanian gambling law reduced the taxes

The new Romanian online gambling law reduced the tax rates of the winnings and the license fees. Until now, a 25% tax was imposed on all winnings, but from now on it applies only to winnings that exceed 100,000 Euros. Otherwise, the tax varies between 1-16%, based on the amount of the win. Many online gambling news outlets are praising these progressive changes.

PokerStars is still operating in other countries, so players can engage in their poker, slot, blackjack, sport betting and live casino offers. The company is one of the most famous poker room operators, enabling the use of numerous currencies and languages. Hopefully they’ll be back in the Romanian market, as they’ve already applied for an online gambling license in Romania.
