Gerry, golf star Rory McIlroy’s father, won GBP 100,000 after his son’s victory at the 143rd British Open at Royal Liverpool, thanks to placing a unique bet ten year ago.

Ladbrokes, major UK bookie, that follows all British gambling laws, announced that Gerry placed a 500/1 bet on his son ten years ago, that Rory will win the big trophy within the next 10 years.

Ladbrokes spokesperson said: “Although we're facing heavy losses we can't help but admire the foresight of Rory's dad and his pals a decade ago.”

It is interesting that in addition to the dad, two friends of the golf pro also bet on him some time ago and similarly won around GBP 80,000 from a comparable wager.

Future success

Rory commented on the big gambling news: “They are all going to be very happy. My dad has never reminded me but I knew he'd done it - it's a nice little bonus.”

Thanks to his latest win, McIlroy only needs the US Masters, in order to complete the grand slam of his sport “Big Four” prizes.

Ladbrokes commented on the odd for this to happen: “It's an 8/1 shot McIlroy wears the Green Jacket at Augusta in 2015 and just 1/2 at any time in his career.”
