Sure Enough NCAA’s Stance on Sports Betting Changes

Realization has dawned on NCAA a little too late. It has been supporting the losing side! When the 1992 PASPA Act got overruled, NCAA is prepared to turn back on its policy. Let’s review NCAA’s stance on sports betting together.

Early May, the US Supreme Court decided to rule out the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. Now, all states have the right to legalize sports betting should they wish to. New Jersey and Delaware already have plans to pass the legislation in the next few weeks. As many as 20 states are expected to follow in the next few years!

It is an integral change of gambling laws in the US. That’s the biggest reason why NCAA’s stance on sports betting changes drastically. Their sports betting policy has come to a halt.

The Extreme NCAA Policy

Its policy on sports betting states that NCAA championship competitions are prohibited to be held in any state that allows wagering on sports. As a result, Nevada has never hosted an NCAA championship game before. In the past, the policy was even used to threaten New Jersey from proceeding with its efforts in getting sports betting legalized!

According to gambling news in US, the previous NCAA’s stance on sports betting cannot survive the latest court ruling. NCAA reacted by ‘temporarily’ suspending their sports betting policy. Championships are allowed, even in states that permit sports wagering. What else could they do? If they don’t change this policy, they might end up having no states to host NCAA championships in the future.

One aspect will remain the same. NCAA is adamant about forbidding student athletes, schools’ athletics employees and coaches to wager on sports. Otherwise, there will be appropriate consequences and penalties.

The story is similar on this side. NCAA’s stance on sports betting should be on the supporting side for good. The NCAA Board of Governors is considering a revision of the sports betting policy. This means the temporary halt could very well be a permanent thing.

NCAA President, Mark Emmert, is even calling for federal government to regulate sports betting instead of the individual states. He said "While we recognize the critical role of state governments, strong federal standards are necessary to safeguard the integrity of college sports and the athletes who play these games at all levels."
