This Week in Pictures: July 05 – July 11, 2016

There were a plethora of major news stories last week so lets take a moment and look back at some of the biggest from around the world.

In the United States a Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, Texas, saw 25 year old military veteran Micah Johnson create chaos when he opened fire on police officers escorting the protest, shooting dead five and injuring another seven. Johnson told police he was angry at the high number of instances in which police officers kill unarmed black men in the USA. He was killed when police detonated an explosive device attached to a robot next to his position, a first in the history US law enforcement.

In Germany a protest against the redevelopment of a residential district in the eastern part Berlin turned violent last week with some 123 police injured in clashes with leftist elements at what had been a predominately peaceful protest against the eviction of squatters as part of an ongoing program of gentrification in the area. Eighty six arrests were made and tear gas liberally employed at the scene of the most violent protest in the city in the last five years. The squatters enjoy much local support.

In Kashmir, following the death of locally popular rebel leader Burhan Wani in fighting with Indian troops, a wave of anti-India protests and violence has seen 18 killed and hundreds injured as local authorities employ tear gas, pellet guns and live ammunition to control the crowds. The violence has paralyzed the region with government offices, schools and most businesses closed and the authorities suspending mobile phone services and mobile internet access to prevent protestors organizing.

In sport Portugal overcame the drama of having their star player Cristiano Ronaldo stretchered off after just half an hour in the Euro 2016 Final to beat the hosts France with an extra-time goal from substitute Antonio Eder. This was the first major trophy won by Portugal and the question has to be, can they do it again in Russia for the World Cup in 2018? You’ll have to read our daily news pages to find out but in the meantime here’s a look back at some of the big news stories we covered over the last seven days.

1. A three-year BetVictor – Liverpool partnership that will bring exclusive deals and markets for the football club’s fans was announced.

2. The 2016 Summer Olympics became historical with the Refugee Olympic Athletes attending.

3. South American football officials have suggested that a match between the winner of the Copa America and the winner of the Euros will happen.

4. News broke last night that Jon Jones failed a June 16th out-of- competition drug test. His fight with Daniel Cormier is now off.

5. Echoes from the past for Trump as owners of Foxwoods Casino, have voiced their disapproval over Donald Trump’s racist comments during a congressional testimony in 1993.

6. GamingZion previewed the Euro 2016 final, and wondered if it was worth it to bet on Portugal.

7. Vegas Dave lost a historic $1 million after Miesha Tate lost the fight to Amanda Nunes.

In the UK a property developer that illegally demolished a pub in Maida Vale was ordered by the courts to rebuild it “brick by brick” within the next two years. Development company CLTX had destroyed the Carlton Tavern and been told to rebuild it before, then appealed that decision, and lost. “This sends a clear message to developers across the country.” Said Councillor Robert Davis, “they cannot run roughshod over the views of local communities.” The Carlton Tavern was a Grade II listed building.
