This Week in Pictures: May 30 – June 5, 2017

The world was awash with big news stories last week so we take a moment to look back over some of the most important.

In the United States President Donald Trump followed through on one of his more controversial campaign promises last week by announcing his decision to withdraw the US from the Paris Climate Accord signed by every other country in the world save for two, Nicaragua and Syria. International reaction was swift and uniformly scornful of this questionable choice with French President Macron in particular mocking Trump with use of the instantly viral phrase “Make Our Planet Great Again”.

In the UK just days, before the General Election, a terrorist attack in London killed 7 and injured dozens more last week when a vehicle, knives and fake-suicide vests were used by a group of individuals to stage an attack in the London Bridge and Borough Market area of the British capital. Armed response units of the Metropolitan Police reacted swiftly to events. All the assailants were shot dead within 8 minutes. This is the third fatal terrorist attack on soft targets in the UK since March.

In the Philippines a indebted gambler, Jessie Carlos, staged a one man attack on the Resorts World Manila casino complex last week. Armed with an assault rifle he strolled through the gaming floors setting fire to tables and stealing chips until challenged by a security guard who wounded him in an exchange of fire. Carlos then fled to a hotel adjacent to the casino where he killed himself. 37 people died in the attack, mostly from smoke inhalation as they hid from danger on the casino's second floor.

In sports the ICC Champions Trophy, a one day Cricket tournament in the UK, saw a clash of giants as India went up against Pakistan at Edgbaston with the former coming out victorious. Captain Virat Kohli got an unbeaten 81 in their convincing 124 run win over their arch rivals. The only question now is can India go on to take the trophy? Meanwhile Ariana Grande returned to Manchester last week to stage a concert in aid of the victims of the Arena attack that killed 22 and injured dozens more. Taking to the stage with the likes of Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and the Black Eyed Peas the Ariana's Manchester One Love concert was televised live across 50 countries and featured appearances from Robbie Williams, Take That and Miley Cyrus. There was even a surprise performance from Manc royalty in the shape of Liam Gallagher. Mz Grande has been widely praised for her sensitive, mature and defiant response to the events of May 22nd.
