We take a look back at the sad and tragic news of last week and some of the other stories we covered.

In the United States a heavily armed gunman opened fire on a Country & Western music festival in Las Vegas Nevada from a room in the Mandalay Hotel overlooking the crowd. Stephen Paddock, armed with a large quantity of firearms and ammunition shot and killed 59 people with over 500 injured during the attack. Paddock killed himself before he could be apprehended by police and the motives behind the most deadly US mass shooting remain unknown.

Many of the weapons used by Paddock were military semi-automatic rifles, legal in the United States, several of which had been modified with a “bump stock” allowing them to be fired in a pseudo-fully automatic manner. The attack reignited the entrenched debate over gun control and whilst there is no expectation for a curbing on the purchase of these deadly weapons there was political momentum behind closing the “bump stock” loophole.

Las Vegas became the scene of one of the largest investigations in its history in the wake of the attack and Marilou Danley, Paddocks girl friend, returned from a visit to the Philippines to assist the authorities. She was unable to shed any light on Paddocks motives. Paddock was a former accountant for Lockheed Martin and a regular high stakes gambler, owned multiple properties and rigorously planned his attack prior to committing the heinous act of terrorism.

In sports Sebastian Vettel saw any realistic hopes he might have had to win this year's Formula One World Championship vanish over the horizon as his Ferrari limped out of the Japanese Grand Prix that was eventually won by rival and championship leader Lewis Hamilton. Will Hamilton win the title again this year? You'll have to read our daily news pages to find out, but in the meantime here's a look at some of the stories we covered over the last seven days.

Meanwhile Nathan Derek Garner has renamed himself after his favourite brand of tea by deed poll. The process by which one can officially change one's name is common in the UK and the 31 year old who claims to drink 20 cups of “Yorkshire Tea” a day is said to be happy with the brand as his middle name. Despite some claiming this a cheap publicity stunt Nathan stuck to his story last week and even admitted he had cups at home that no one else was allowed to use as they were for his tea alone.
