The best pound for pound fighter in history is once again forced to sit out due to a major controversy. In this article we’ll discuss what led to Jon Jones failing his drug test.

On March 19th, 2011, Jon Jones made history by becoming the youngest UFC champion of all time at just 23 years of age. He had recorded seven straight wins to earn the crack at the title, and took full advantage of the opportunity and made US gambling news by dominating Shogun Rua in route to a 3rd round TKO stoppage.

This fight thrust Jones into the spotlight, something that in hindsight was likely too much, too soon for the young light-heavyweight. Over the course of the next several years, Jon would become one of the most polarizing figures in the sport with some of the most incredible performances of all time inside the cage and a number of disasters outside of it.

Jones’ first brush with the law

For much of his early title reign, Jon Jones was seen as the prime example of what a champion should be. He was the perfect fighter inside the Octagon and outside appeared to have his life in order outside of it. In May of 2012, this image was broken.

Jon Jones odds history from Intertops

  • Vs. Ovince St. Preux: -530
  • Vs Daniel Cormier: -179
  • Vs. Glover Teixiera: -425
  • Vs. Alexander Gustafsson: -701
Jon Jones crashed his Bentley into a tree and was quickly arrested for driving under the influence. This is considered to be the first step to what led Jon Jones failing his drug test. Luckily for Jon and the fans however, he was back in action within a few months.

Jones vs. Cormier 1

After seven straight title defenses, Jon Jones was finally scheduled to take on number one contender Daniel Cormier in what many fans were predicting would be the toughest test of his career. Sites like Intertops Sportsbook were listing the odds extremely close for both men but ultimately Jones was listed as the favorite.

The lead up to the fight was intense with both men claiming the other would be embarrassed. At one point they literally fought on stage during a press conference. In the end Jones proved most online sportsbooks in the US correct by earning the unanimous decision. Unfortunately, news came out that Jones tested positive for cocaine weeks before the bout.

Jon’s public perception was irreversibly changed after this, but it wasn’t until he was involved in a hit and run involving a pregnant woman just a year later that the fans truly turned on him. He finally was able to return at UFC 200, but one day before the bout tested positive for banned substances.

Most recent failed drug test

Jon alleged that the drug test was caused by a tainted sex pill, and he returned a year later to defeat Ovince St. Preux. He was rescheduled to face Cormier on July 29th at UFC 214 and won via a spectacular head kick KO. Once again, Jones let the fans down after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.

What led to Jon Jones failing his drug test is up for debate. He had been heavily involved with weight lifting during his time outside the cage and many believe it was around this time that he began using PED’s. This is all speculative, and it should be noted that Jon has his time in court to make his case heard.

It’s anyone’s guess what will come next for MMA’s greatest talent. If given a maximum suspension, he will be out of action for four years. Still, if he does return it’s likely he’ll be listed as the MMA betting favorite by sites like Intertops Sportsbook.
