The 2017 World Athletics Championship has just wrapped up. There were a number of interesting stories that came in the aftermath of the event including Usian Bolt’s retirement and Caster Semenya’s amazing 800m gold win, but one of the most talked about is the impressive performance from Inika McPherson.

While not a household name, Inika stole the show by performing the best in the high-jump on team USA despite being the smallest athlete at just 5 ft 4 inches, and rocked an entirely unique style including face paint and numerous tattoos.

So who is Inika McPherson off the track field? Well, her story is an interesting one. She was born in 1986 to a single mother and began competing in the high jump in fourth grade. She learned techniques online and began finding success both domestically and internationally.

Her personal life has seen ups and downs. After being kicked out of the University of California, she took up taxi driving and began using drugs while still competing athletically. In 2014 she tested positive for cocaine blood markers and was suspended for 21 months.

She stayed active and managed to turn her life around, eventually qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Most recently, she made US gambling news by recording the best performance on team USA in the high jump in London.

She’s bounced back from adversity before and will likely thrive off the newfound attention she’s received in London.
