As poker was considered a game of chance in Switzerland for a long time, it was illegal to play the game. But between 1993 and 1998, the gaming legislation changed. And some years later, the Swiss Federal Gaming Board (SFGB) qualified certain poker tournaments as games of skill, which allowed the organization of these events outside of casinos, as long as there was the canton’s approval. However, according to online poker news sites in Switzerland, the Supreme Court ruled in 2010 that Texas Hold’em was a game of luck, rather than a game of skill. This decision led to a restriction of poker rooms across the country, as only casinos were able to host tournaments - though private tournaments can still take place. Until 2019, all forms of online gambling in Switzerland were illegal, though international operators were still able to target Swiss players and the law didn’t enforce any penalty to those willing to play in online poker sites.
