The Plot – F1 The Movie Review

F1 the Movie is a story that takes place within the culture of Formula 1. However, the main character is a fictional driver, Sonny Hayes, who is a retired rookie convinced to take a seat once more. His teammate is the hotshot rookie, Joshua Pearce. The story is about the two earning Sonny’s redemption through the race. According to Digital Spy, the movie thanked Martin Donelly, whose real-life story was the biggest inspiration and example for Sonny Hayes’s character. While this movie is fictional, at the same time? It may capture the essence of F1 as a sport.

Interestingly, while the film is fictional, it draws from real-life inspiration. Martin Donnelly’s story, according to Digital Spy, helped shape Sonny’s arc. Donnelly’s tragic crash and his resilience afterward echo in the film’s quieter moments. Thus, the movie adds a layer of authenticity to its otherwise crafted drama. However, it doesn’t get lost in nostalgia. The movie stays in the present. It leans into the contrast between the seasoned driver and the fearless rookie. Together, they represent the past and future. Strength and speed. It’s great to hype up for the upcoming Belgian GP. Register at Bovada Sportsbook and bet on F1 online!

How Did The Cast Do?

Let’s continue our F1 the Movie review with the cast. According to IMDb, Brad Pitt played Sonny Hayes, while Damson Idris played Joshua Pearce. We also saw Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, and Tobias Menzies. See, one thing about this movie was that it reflected the personality of the drivers. While it seeks to capture a generation before the current one, it did not fail at delivering what is needed in this sport. The love for thrill-seeking and high-speed is perfectly fitting for an F1 movie. Perhaps, many movies fail with thisstandardcharacter format. Yet for F1? This is how drivers are!

The supporting cast doesn’t disappoint either. Javier Bardem brings a commanding presence as the team principal. Kerry Condon gives the story a moral compass. Tobias Menzies adds quiet strength as a veteran engineer. Each role fits neatly into the world of Formula 1, where personalities matter as much as speed. Because the movie tries to reflect real driver personalities, the performances had to walk a fine line. Too dramatic, and it feels fake. Too subtle, and it gets boring. However, the cast stays right in the middle. They reflect the obsessive, thrill-seeking nature of the sport without becoming caricatures.

The General Reception – F1 The Movie Review

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the movie was an absolute success! See, here is the thing. In other movies, this type of cast and character development starts to get boring. For action movies, especially. Yet, F1 is really all about high-speed entertainment. The movie is a story inspired by the real driver’s tragic career. But on the other hand? They created exactly what we experience while watching F1.

With one key exception: Here, everyone is rooting for the main character, rather than their team. Essentially, the movie is capturing the essence of a fan who is experiencing loss and victory with the team they pick to cheer for. You do not have to be an F1 fan for that. This is a great movie for both F1 fans and non-F1 fans. This might be the key for people to start loving the sport.

Is This Movie For F1 Fans?

Yes, but not exclusively. See, many would argue that F1 fans require something historic, something that captures the true glory of F1. And it worked! Of course, a few will say that they want a movie about a real driver. However, for that, we already have Senna! This F1 the Movie review seeks to highlight the perfect balance they created. For F1 fans, this is a thrilling story that captures the essence of a sport we love. And for those who haven’t watched F1? This is a potential entry into the sport, yet a great story about the transformation of the human spirit. No, it isn’t philosophical at all. It is the good old story of a rookie and an expert working together, managing to earn redemption for the expert’s past failure.

But in F1, this is working! You know what this story reminds us of? Exactly, Aston Martin. We have Fernando Alonso coming back from retirement, working together with Lance Stroll, who is still a somewhat new-generation driver. They are seeing failure, they compete, yet they are doing this together. Even if they aren’t fully friends. These things happen in the sport.

What Was Bad About It? – F1 The Movie Review

The movie has a pretty basic story, with little to no character development. It can work because F1 drivers do not go through gigantic character development either. Just take a look at Oliver Bearman in 10 years. His look will change, but his personality? Maybe less youthful at best. However, there were a few things that went south. The movie forced an unnecessary romantic sub-plot, which is just boring at this point.

Furthermore, they failed to highlight the politics of F1. F1 is all about scandals, politics, conspiracy theories, actual conspiracies, regulations, and drama. Yet, all of this was left out of the movie. Almost as if we weren’t watching a movie about the sport that releases some dramatic news or rule changes every half week. Because of that, the film feels a bit sanitized. Too clean. Real F1 is messy. Emotional. Packed with politics and media firestorms. This movie brushes past all of it.

We are at the end of our F1 the Movie review! As this article is being written, we are preparing for the 2025 Belgian GP! But what is common in F1: The Movie and F1, other than the fact that the movie is literally about the sport? The betting! Because you can bet on both movie plots and the F1 GP. Yes, betting is part of the experience for many. People place wagers on the outcomes of races, team results, or even qualifying surprises. However, movie betting has also become a thing.
