Our expert prediction is that you should bet on Newcastle United to beat Manchester City tonight. It might seem crazy, but here’s why:

1: Newcastle United have momentum

During their 3-0 win against Swansea this weekend, Newcastle looked something they haven’t all season: good. Suddenly, Jamal Lascelles was a defensive leader, Moussa Sissoko’s 35 caps for France didn’t seem totally inexplicable, and Andros Townsend was excellent.

If you bet on sport in the UK, you wouldn’t put money on the Toon to stay up, but being an actual football team will certainly help. Manchester City will be a different proposition, but Newcastle will be full of a belief and desperate to put together a run of good form.

2: Manchester City don’t really need the win

Best Odds at BetVictor Sportsbook
  • Newcastle United to win
    @ 6.25 (21/4)
  • Draw
    @ 4.40 (17/5)
  • Manchester City to win
    @ 1.57 (4/7)
After their convincing win against Chelsea, and Arsenal’s disappointing draw against Crystal Palace, City’s position in the top four looks a lot more secure. Manchester United are still four points behind, but City still have Arsenal to play. If they can beat Wenger’s struggling team, you’d definitely bet on man city to qualify for the Champions league.

If City were ever going to take their foot off the pedal, and be a little distracted, it could be tonight.

3: City have Champions league next week

Best Odds for First Goalscorer at BetVictor Sportsbook
  • Moussa Sissokho
    @ 21.00 (20/1)
  • Andros Townsend
    @13.00 (12/1)
  • Aleksandar Mitrovic
    @ 8.50 (15/2)
The main reason for City’s distraction, of course, is their upcoming Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid. This exciting prospect will understandably be on players’ minds, even if online sportsbooks consider them as underdogs.

Newcastle will be physical and up for a fight, so City’s players might well be concentrating on avoiding injury. Players like Aguero and Nasri are prone to spells on the sideline, so their priority will be maintaining their fitness for more exciting matches to come.

4: Bet on Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez to have a plan

  • Yaya Toure
    @ 7.50 (13/2)
  • Kevin De Bruyne
    6.50 (11/2)
  • Sergio Aguero
    @ 3.60 (13/5)
Someone who knows all about the latter-stages of the Champions league is Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez. He actually began the season as Real Madrid manager, and he’ll hope to show his former club that he has the tactical nous to beat City.

As he showed in his days as Liverpool manager, Benitez excels at coming up with tactical masterplans for big games, especially as an underdog. For Newcastle, games don’t come any bigger than this.

5: BetVictor have a great first goalscorer bonus

If you bet on Newcastle United to beat Man City, you should also bet on a Newcastle player to score first. Mitrovic (8.50) was brilliant as a sub against Swansea, and will be a good bet to score first if he starts. Andros Townsend (13.00) was also sensational, and he can score from anywhere.

If you fancy City to win, Kevin De Bruyne (6.50) is in terrific form, while Sergio Aguero (3.60) is always likely to grab a goal.

For all First Goalscorer bets placed on this match at BetVictor, you will receive a bonus First Goalscorer bet to be placed on any English Premier League match played on Wednesday 20th April. Only single bets will qualify, and your bonus (of up to £5) will be credited to your account once the match ends. For more details, go to BetVictor Sportsbook.
