US Lawmakers Urged To Legalize Sports Betting

NBA and other major sports leagues are appealing to US lawmakers to make sports betting legitimate, which would uncover a goldmine and boost the American economy.

What do these outstanding US sports leagues such as the NBA, the National Football League, Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League all have in common? They are some of America’s favorites. For decades, they have been the target of illegal underground gambling.

Unlike their British counterparts who wizened up in the early 60s; US sports fans are still doing it in the dark. This is because land-based and mobile betting on sports is illegal in most of the USA, all except for Nevada, that is.

Now the very prude and proper top notch National Basketball Association is pleading on the American government to revise the US gambling laws. Not so long ago, when New Jersey endeavored to legitimize sports betting, their attempt was quickly squashed by the Federal government.

According to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, the authorization of sports betting would ensure that sports fans have a “safe and legal way to wager on professional sporting events”. Ladbrokes spokesman Ciaran O’Brien supported this view by reiterating what everyone knows: sports betting in the USA is a $400 billion goldmine just waiting to be explored.

If sports betting is made legal then obviously it would take some time to grant and apply for licenses and regulate the gambling procedures. However, it would be beneficial not only for the gambling industry but Uncle Sam would certainly get its fair share of this nice piece of multi-billion dollar American pie.
