DGA Awards are a big deal because they give strong hints on the top contenders for the Best Director race at the Academy Awards. Of the last 17 DGA winners, 15 have gone on to win the Oscars. Last year the director of ‘1917’ Sam Mendes won the DGA’s feature-film award before losing the Oscars to a fellow DGA nominee Bong Joon Ho of ‘Parasite’.

This year there are five strong contenders of which two women are nominated and have a great chance of winning. They are Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell who have shown outstanding directorial talent in theatrical feature films. The winner will be announced on 10 April and Zhao has so far the best 2021 DGA Awards betting odds.

Zhao won the Golden Globes and Critics Choice

Chloe Zhao the director of ‘Nomadland’ won the best director at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. Thus, she is the natural Oscar and DGA favorite, according to online sportsbook news sites in the United States. Zhao burst into the Hollywood scene four years ago, and she became one of the most pursued directors in the industry.

However Zhao’s ‘Nomadland’ is no doubt her best piece of art. The film tells the story of Fern (Frances McDormand) who packs her van and sets off on the road. She explores life after the company she worked for in rural Nevada collapses. The film also follows a loose collection of nomads for whom ‘retirement’ means traveling the country for seasonal work. The film seems to have all that it takes to win the DGA award with 1.17 odds at 22BET Sportsbook.

Fennell’s work is another strong contender

The other female talent with a strong chance of 13 to win at the 2021 DGA awards betting odds is Emerald Fennell. She is competing with her debut film ‘Promising Young Woman’. Fennell’s work is a dark subject matter painted with a colorful screenplay. It gives the audience a highly distinctive rape-revenge thriller starring Carey Mulligan.

Fincher is among the leading male directors

Among the male directors, David Fincher appears to be a strong challenger in the race. He has been on top of the film industry for 25 years and well-known for exploring the darkest edges of humanity. Fincher is competing for his black and white biopic ‘Mank’. It explores the life and frustrations of Citizen Kane’s screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz.

The film was originally written by Fincher’s father Jack in the late 1990s. However, it failed to be picked up by Hollywood studios, until Netflix decided to fulfill Fincher’s vision. It has garnered a lot of admiration, thus it might win the DGA award with 6.5 odds.

Isaac Chung won the Golden Globe for foreign-language film

The director of ‘Minari’ Lee Isaac Chung picked up the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language film. Thus, the film has been well acknowledged that it has strong potential to win the DGA award with 11 value, as per online sportsbooks in the United States. The film is about a Korean immigrant family planting new roots in rural Kansas in the 1980s. The story is very real and it is inspired by the director’s personal experience.

Sorkin competes for his ‘Chicago 7’ film

The film ‘Trial of the Chicago 7’ directed by Aaron Sorkin has been listed in all top film festivals in the world. It won numerous awards with the latest one being the Golden Globe for the Best Screenplay. The dramatic scenes, rising temperatures, and creativity in the film gives the director a chance at the 2021 DGA awards betting odds with 11 value.
