PGA Championship 2023 Tips: 105th Edition of the US PGA

Have a read through our PGA Championship 2023 tips to learn about the favourites to win the competition. According to online sportsbook news in the US, these players are the most likely to go all the way.

Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm, a renowned name in golf, is currently the top pick at mr.play to clinch the US PGA. The Spaniard is keen to augment his major championships tally after bagging the Masters Tournament in early April. This victory marked his second major championship, supplementing his US Open victory in 2021.

Rahm outperformed Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson in the final round of the 2023 Masters Tournament. Rahm was initially trailing Koepka during the initial three rounds but ultimately surpassed him in the concluding round. Koepka, despite his impressive record of four major championships, is yet to secure a Masters Tournament win.

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy will be marking his 34th birthday just a few weeks prior to the commencement of the US PGA. The Northern Irish golfer is a two-time victor of the US PGA, although his latest triumph at the tournament dates back nearly a decade. McIlroy has an impressive total of four major championships, with victories in the US Open in 2011, the US PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014, and The Open Championship in 2014. Lately, however, he hasn’t managed to secure any major tournament wins.

McIlroy’s career has been plagued by injuries and a struggle to maintain peak physical condition. Nevertheless, he seems to be on the path to recovery, having just missed out on the 2022 Masters Tournament, where he was the runner-up to American Scottie Scheffler. If McIlroy were to back himself for any major championship, it would most probably be the US PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler

Scottie Scheffler is considered one of the top contenders to triumph in the US PGA Championship. As highlighted earlier, he already secured a major championship victory last year, the Masters Tournament. At only 26 years old, the American is a relatively young player. He finished in the Top 10 at the 2023 Masters Tournament and was runner-up at the 2022 US Open championship.

Scheffler is endorsed as one of the three frontrunners to win, given that the odds for him and the two aforementioned players are quite similar. However, in the previous year’s iteration of the tournament, he failed to make the cut, which could be a point of caution.

Justin Thomas

Last year’s PGA Championship victor, Justin Thomas, has only two major tournaments under his belt. Both of these victories came from the US PGA Championship, in 2017 and 2022. The seasoned American golfer has participated in 29 events and successfully made the cut 23 times. However, in his latest major championship – the 2023 Masters Tournament – JT did not make the cut.

Thomas isn’t among the top favourites to clinch the US PGA, but to discount him entirely wouldn’t do justice to the two-time PGA Championship winner. The 30-year-old could very well echo his success from the previous year and secure a third PGA Championship.

Jordan Spieth

Rounding out the top five contenders to clinch the 2023 US PGA Championship, the odds indicate Jordan Spieth as a potential underdog to accomplish this task. Intriguingly, the US PGA Championship is the solitary major tournament that remains absent from Spieth’s collection of trophies.

Spieth secured victories at the Masters Tournament and the US Open in 2015, as well as The US Championship in 2017. Despite not having won the US PGA, he came strikingly close in 2015, where he landed a solid second place. Earlier this year, the 29-year-old achieved a joint-fourth finish in the Masters Tournament. With his current form being commendable, the American is set on nabbing his first-ever PGA Championship to enhance his major trophies’ count.
