Armenia to join the EU? Pashinyan eyes a 2027 or 2028 application while Russia pushes back.

The headlines are all featuring Armenia to join the EU.  Pashinyan calls a 2027 or 2028 application realistic, although Moscow keeps pushing back. Below, we cover the timeline, the motives, and Russia’s reaction. We also look at Armenia’s European presence through Eurovision and football. Armenia To Join The EU: Membership Application 2027/2028

According to Euronews, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan considers 2027 or 2028 realistic dates for Armenia’s formal EU membership application. He discussed the possibility during the 2026 EU Enlargement Summit in Brussels. Pashinyan explained that Armenia had already started preparing for this important political decision. The order of events matters just as much as the dates. Pashinyan wants Armenia to apply first and wait for an answer. A roadmap would follow, and only then would voters face a referendum.

Critics may call this slow, yet we find the logic fairly sound. After all, people can judge an offer better once they see it. Meanwhile, the government has a nearer goal on its desk. It hopes to finish visa liberalisation with the EU by 2029. Ordinary Armenians would probably feel that change long before any accession treaty. Applying also differs enormously from joining, and that gap can last for years. Therefore, we treat 2027 or 2028 as the opening chapter, not the finale. Why Does Armenia Want To Join The European Union?

While we debate Armenia joining the EU, it’s important to also wonder: What can they win as a Russian-adjacent country? According to Armenpress, the Armenian government sees positive signals regarding European enlargement. Pashinyan believes Brussels and Yerevan could have increasingly similar expectations. Their cooperation has reached its highest level historically. The government also wants to establish a European alternative for Armenian citizens. Yet his favourite word here is not membership. Pashinyan argues that many people long assumed Armenia had no other path. His government wants to break that assumption and give citizens a real choice.

We find this framing quite clever, because it hands the decision to voters. Nobody can easily accuse him of dragging the country anywhere. Security and money sit in the background too. Armenia froze its participation in the Russian-led CSTO, and Pashinyan ruled out returning. The EU, for its part, has raised its profile in Yerevan quickly. Armenia hosted the first summit of its kind with the bloc this May. Ursula von der Leyen then returned to Yerevan in July. Clearly, both sides want this relationship to look serious.

Russia’s Reaction: Armenia To Join The EU

According to Azatutyun, Armenia’s European ambitions create tensions with its existing Eurasian Economic Union membership. The two economic frameworks present significant compatibility challenges. Pashinyan nevertheless argues that Armenia should develop greater independence. The country must eventually address these competing international commitments. Russian officials have not exactly picked gentle words. Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk once compared EU membership to boarding the Titanic. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later told Armenia to remember Turkey’s endless wait.

Other Eurasian Economic Union leaders then raised the stakes on 29 May. Together, they urged Armenia to hold a referendum as soon as possible. Here, we see the real test of the whole project. Overchuk says Armenia’s trade with Russia far outweighs its trade with the EU. Thus, a sudden break could hurt businesses and families before benefits arrive. Pashinyan plans to stay in the bloc while reforms remain compatible. Eventually, however, Armenia must settle these competing commitments. That day will not be comfortable for anyone in Yerevan.

What Happens Next?

Before we could predict Armenia to join the EU, first we have to think about the more recent events. Eurasian Economic Union leaders meet in Saint Petersburg in December. Overchuk expects proposals on Armenia’s situation to reach that meeting. Before then, the CSTO summit on 11 November could target Yerevan’s voting rights. Neither gathering decides anything in Brussels. Even so, both will show how hard Moscow plans to push. Civil Contract holds a parliamentary majority, but it lacks two-thirds of the seats.

Its vote share also slipped from 53.92% in 2021 to 49.8% this year. Therefore, Pashinyan cannot treat any future referendum as a formality. Strong Armenia has already asked election officials to annul June’s result. A referendum campaign could easily reopen those arguments. Brussels must also make its own decision on enlargement, as Pashinyan himself concedes. Events such as Eurovision will definitely endorse Estonia’s entry into the European Union.

Armenia To Join The EU Among European Politics

The country has been present in European football already, and its participation enriches the European scene through UEFA. Its clubs travel across the continent every summer for qualifying rounds. In that sense, Armenia joined one European family long before considering this one. Recently, FC Noah has done the heavy lifting. The Yerevan club reached the Conference League’s league phase in 2024. Along the way, it even faced Chelsea in a landmark game. A year later, Noah became the first Armenian side to reach the playoffs. Those results helped lift Armenia to 33rd in UEFA’s coefficient rankings.

That position secures a Europa League spot for 2027/28. Sion ended Noah’s latest run in qualifying, so the climb remains steep. Politics has started to follow the same road. Around 50 leaders attended the European Political Community summit in Armenia this May. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas praised voters for choosing a European future. Of course, Moscow and the Armenian opposition see that picture very differently. Our view is simple: Armenia already acts European in many ways. Institutions, sadly, move far slower than football.

Where To Bet On European Politics

And this is everything we know about Armenia joining the EU. Armenian elections showed how much interest this niche can attract. Polymarket ran markets on June’s parliamentary vote. Civil Contract eventually took 49.81%, while Strong Armenia finished at about 23%. Manifold also hosted a question about a possible EU referendum. Looking ahead, the application date and referendum look like natural next topics. Availability, however, depends heavily on where you live. Three main types of platforms offer political wagers across Europe. Polymarket dominates attention across the continent, yet its legal position looks shaky.

At least ten European countries have also blocked Polymarket outright. Gibraltar stood out as the only European licensing exception in that review. Traditional bookmakers remain the other obvious route, especially in regulated markets. Their political menus favour major national elections, so Armenian specials may prove rare. Patience matters here as well. An application market could stay open for many months, leaving your money idle. Read the resolution rules carefully, because applying and joining mean very different things. Register at 22Bet Sportsbook and bet on Armenian politics today!
