Gambling in Dominican Republic
Like most Caribbean nations, the Dominican Republic base their economy on tourism. Unlike most, however, gambling is an important part of this. As such, the republic has become one of two main gambling destinations for Americans looking for more than just sand, sea and sun.
The industry was first regulated in 1999, after a spate of illegal operations opened their doors. After this, sports betting was regulated in 2006. Unlike other Caribbean countries, locals are allowed to gamble, too.
Online Gambling in Dominican Republic
The government awards licenses for sports betting and games of chance online. While it was legal for online sportsbooks to operate since 1964, online games of chance were not legal until a 2006 law. However, this was not enough, and a further amendment of the law in 2011 allowed the government to actually issue licenses, and casino company Amaya gained a license.
