Recent survey by Ipsos showed 41 percent of Americans believe online gambling is illegal in the United States

Confusion with online poker and online gambling sites in USA is a general issue. This was the result of a lottery and gaming market research by Ipsos, a global research company. Forty one percent of Americans though that online gambling is illegal.

Forty six percent of study participants are in favor of online gambling legalization provided the corresponding American gambling laws were introduced. And another twenty five percent are in favor of permitting internet gambling without any regulations.

Online gambling is not illegal in USA, but that is a point-of-view question. Payment processors are not permitted to carry out gambling transactions, so there is no legal way to deposit/withdraw funds. However there are no detailed regulations that deem internet gambling illegal and do not permit citizens to gamble online.

Paul Lauzon, senior VP of Ipsos told gambling news in United States: “While there are controversies and concerns, the idea of legalizing and regulating Internet gambling seems to have some possible upside for the gaming industry in America. Currently 9 percent of Americans admit to spending some money on internet gambling activities in the past year.”

He went on to say: “If Internet gambling were to be permitted and regulated by some form of government, 13 percent agreed they probably or definitely would spend money on this type of activity during the next 12 months. This proportion goes up to 15 percent if Internet gambling were legally permitted and offered by their favorite land-based casino.”

Ipsos research was based on responses of 1006 Americans contacted online from April 29 to May 1. Demographics were balanced by employing weighting method. Allowed margin of mistake in the sample of this size is approximately +/- 3.09 percentage points.
