It may have been a bad football season for Manchester United, but the team still has a special trophy to put in the Old Trafford trophy cabinet.

It looks like the guys at Manchester United have better luck at poker than football. Team representatives won the PartyPoker Poker Champions Cup last week, after playing against rivals from and Marseille, Anderlecht, Juventus and Real Madrid. This wasn’t your usual poker game. Instead of hosting it in some fancy Italian poker rooms, the organizers chose the Juventus Stadium as a location for the event.

According to local gambling news, it was Denis Irwin who led the Red Devils to victory. The former United and Republic of Ireland full back had to beat the teams led by rivals Enzo Scifo, Stefano Taconni, Manuel Amoros and Rafael Martin Vazquez.

Bad luck at football

This season, United competed in the FA Cup and the League Cup, entering both tournaments in the third round. The team’s performance was disappointing. While they managed to get into the semi-finals of the League Cup, things didn’t go so well in the FA Cup, where they fell at the first hurdle.

The team failed to defend their Premier League title and qualify for the European tournament for the first time since 1990. Manager David Moyes was scapegoated and sacked on 22 April.

“We may have not had a lot of success this season, but we persevere and this was a good win,”
Irwin told reporters. “Hopefully the football team can get back to winning ways next season,” he added.
