  • Several young stars have emerged in cycling in 2020
  • Cyclo-cross champions van Aert and van der Poel also great in road race
  • Slovenian Tadej Pogacar won the 2020 Tour de France at the age of only 21
In the 2020 season several young cyclists achieved great results and won the biggest events of the sport. Like Slovenian Tadej Pogacar who managed to win the Tour de France at the age of only 21. But Belgian youngsters Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel also had a great season just like the following names in our list of the latest stars of cycling.  The 2020 season was not easy for the athletes and cyclists were not exceptions. With a long break without any big races, they had to keep their form with virtual competitions and new kinds of training. Looks like young cyclists could adapt better to the new conditions. As after the restart of the season they could win almost every race including the Grand Tours. And even though there have been new talents every season, this year we can get to know several young cyclists who can dominate the sport in the next 10-15 years.

1. Multi-talent Dutch is in the latest stars of cycling

Mathieu van der Poel by the age of 24 has already achieved great successes in different disciplines of cycling. First he won the Cyclo-cross world championships in 2015 which he could repeat two more times, in 2019 and 2020. He is also the European champion in mountain biking from 2019 and the winner of the Dutch National Road Race Championship. The Flying Dutchman had his breakthrough last year when he won the Tour of Britain and the Amstel Gold Race. But van der Poel continued in similar form this year, and got the overall victory on the BinckBank Tour and on the Tour of Flanders.

2. Wout van Aert, another cyclo-cross world champion

The Belgian cyclist also started with cyclo-cross, and he is also a three-time world champion in it. Last year Wout van Aert started to concentrate on road racing and he achieved great results straight away.  He won the national championship, the points classification of the Criterium du Dauphine and even two stages in the 2019 Tour de France. In 2020 he could repeat all of these successes and added a few more to them. Like winning the one day classics of Milan-San Remo and Strade Bianche. Besides finishing as a runner-up in the road world championship both in the road race and time trial. Amazing perfomance from the 26-year-old Jumbo Vista rider, who is predicted to win in 2021 too by online gambling sites in Belgium.

3. Tadej Pogacar, the new king of the Tour

Most experts expected Slovenian Primoz Roglic to fight for the overall win during this year’s Tour de France and he did so. He was wearing the yellow jersey until the 20th stage when his compatriot, Tadej Pogacar defeated him in the time trial and got the  overall win. Certainly, the 22-year-old rider’s success wasn’t undeserved as he was riding very strongly on the whole tournament. He was the only rider who could go along with Roglic on several stages, still his victory at the end was a shock for almost everyone. Even though Pogacar is another great talent and has been one of the latest stars of cycling. He won the Tour of California last year and became the youngest cyclist to win a UCI World Tour. He also won three stages in the 2019 Vuelta and finished third in the overall standing. But to win the yellow, white and polka dot jerseys at the 2020 Tour de France was a fantastic achievement. Now he is in the top favorites for next year’s tournament as well.

4. Another huge Belgian talent

Online sportsbooks in Belgium also mention another Belgian talent, Remco Evenepoel is the favorites for the 2021 Tour de France. This prediction might be a bit too optimistic as the 20-year old Quick-Step rider hasn’t competed in any of the Grand Tours yet. But as we can see from Pogacar’s example, anything can happen in a race. Even a young rider can win it on his debut like he did. Evenepoel became the junior world champion in both time trial and road race in 2018, then finished second in the following year in the senior time trial world championhips. He won his first major race also in 2019, the Tour of Belgium and the classic race of Clasica de San Sebastian. This year he added more wins to his list, after victories at the Tour de Pologne and Vuelta a Burgos. Sadly he suffered a serious accident in August, fracturing his pelvis, hopefully he can fully recover for next season.

5. Tao Geoghegan Hart in the latest stars of cycling of Great-Britain

Cycling fans can witness the  victory of another young rider, British Tao Geoghegan Hart who won this year’s Giro d’Italia. He has been a member of the Ineos team since 2017, but he was in the background so far. Behind other top riders of the team like Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas or Egan Bernal. Geoghegan Hart has already achieved some great results. Like winning a stage in the 2018 Criterium du Dauphine. Or finishing second in the overall standing of the 2019 Tour of the Alps. But the Brit showed his true capabilities this year. He was riding strong in the whole tournament in Italy and won the overall standing causing another big surprise in the season. We shall see if he can continue in this form next season. When he will face even stronger competition with Adam Yates also joining his team.
