Proponents of the Massachusetts online lottery might soon have reason to celebrate, as one of the state’s most powerful politicians is now pushing for legalization.

Deborah Goldberg, the Massachusetts state treasurer, is hoping the second time’s the charm when it comes to legalizing online lottery. Goldberg’s first push to allow the state lottery to offer online games was sharply rejected by lottery retailers, who feared their sales would plummet if lottery gamblers didn’t need to leave their house.

The state Senate made US gambling news by approving Massachusetts online lottery sales during the 2016 legislative session, but the plans were eventually scrapped before the House could approve the state’s economic development package.

Deborah Goldberg has stated that she will file her new bill by November 2nd, one month before the deadline to submit state lottery revenue forecast. The treasurer hasn’t hid her opinions that the lottery would have seen a monetary decline in 2016 were it not for the massive excitement over the $1.5 billion jackpot back in January. Goldberg also believes lottery sales will be negatively impacted by the new casinos being built in the state.

It remains to be seen whether the Massachusetts online lottery will actually become legalized. If it does, they will join Michigan, Georgia, Kentucky, and Illinois as the only states to offer web and mobile lotto services.

Are there any online lotteries you can access here now?

Unfortunately for fans of internet lottery gambling, there are no options to play the lottery online inside of Massachusetts, unlike the Indonesia lottery where online options exist. Internet gambling as a whole is illegal inside the US, and most internet gambling sites will not accept US players. It’s an exciting time for Massachusetts, and many lottery fans will be eagerly awaiting the results of this new push for legalized internet gambling. There is sure to be some opposition, but hopes are high that 2017 might finally be the year.
