Gambling in Kenya

Legal forms of gambling were first introduced to Kenya in 1966 with the creation of the Betting Control and Licensing Board. The board's mandate is to issue licenses and regulate licenses gambling establishments as well as combat illegal gambling operations. Gambling is regulated and taxed, with the government collecting $3 million in revenue from the industry in 2012.

In contrast to many of its African neighbors, Kenya benefits from having a clearly defined legal code with regards to the activity. Currently, legal forms of betting available to Kenyans include land-based casinos, the official state-run online casino, and two state-run lotteries available via the internet and mobile devices. Additionally, Kenyans are known to frequent unregulated domestic gambling sites as well as those operated from abroad, despite government attempts to discourage such activities.

In 2013 BetKenya, a state-run online casino monopoly developed by the Canadian firm Amaya, was made available to Kenyan gamblers. It is currently the only legal online casino in the country and is available to domestic players only. The site offers classic Vegas-style table games like poker, roulette, blackjack, and slots. While BetKenya provides the only legal outlet for online gamblers, many of them frequent unregulated and foreign-operated online casinos.
