Scottish gamblers bet nearly GBP 10 million on the eternal rival England to win the 2014 World Cup.

It seems that Scots are counting on England to win big this summer as they placed wagers worth of GBP 10 million, which of course was somewhat surprising and made it into the gambling news.

Paddy Power’s spokesperson commented lightheartedly: “Of all bets placed in Scotland, around 10% have been on England – with 90% on anyone but England.”

The grand bookie gives best chances to Argentina, followed by Brazil and Uruguay.

Expert opinion

Paul Petrie from McBookie, added on the issue: “Scotland might not have qualified but Scots punters most certainly will take part. Turnover on the World Cup is expected to break all records, despite the unfriendly kick-off times.”

Representative of William Hill bookmaker, which follows all UK gambling laws, also commented on the potential profits this summer: “We should see the first GBP 1 billion World Cup for the industry. For us it will be like eight Grand Nationals or four Cheltenham Festivals all rolled into one.”
