  • 2021/22 Portugal league is held between 6 Aug - May 2022
  • Sporting are the defending champions after winning their first title in 19 years
  • Benfica and Porto can fight for title again this season

The 2021/22 Portugal league started two weeks ago, on the 6th of August and it will finish in May, 2022. Sporting Lisbon is the defending champions and mentioned again in the favorites. But the 2021/22 Portugal league winner odds favor this time their rivals, Benfica and Porto to get the title.

18 teams compete in the top Portuguese football league, the Primeira Liga this season again including the three promoted teams, Estoril, Vizela, and Arouca. Four teams started the new season with 100% and two wins, Gil Vicente and the three big teams, Sporting, Benfica, and FC Porto. The season victory of any other club than the big three would be a huge surprise. And it only happened twice in the league’s history. Belenenses won a long time ago, in 1946 while Boavista managed to become the champions in 2001. It is hard to imagine a similar surprise this season. Sporting is the defending champions after winning their 19th Primeira Liga title in 2021. Surely they will aim to keep their title but it won’t be an easy task this year.

2021/22 Portugal League Winner Odds Favor Benfica

Benfica has won the the Primeira Liga title a record 37 times, the last time in the 2018-19 season. Online sportsbooks in Portugal slightly favor them to win again with the odds of 2.20. But their main rival, Porto follows them closely with the odds of 2.37. So bookmakers expect a tight race for the title between the big clubs. Even though last season was the third one, Sporting became the champions. This time Benfica can fight for the title again after a disappointing run last season.

Their successful manager, Jorge Jesus, who won 10 trophies with the club returned last season.  But he couldn’t bring any titles in his first season. Plus the team was also eliminated from the Champions League in the third qualifying round. Now Jesus and the team can try to get much better results both at home and in the Champions League. Where they face PSV in the playoffs and lead 2-1 after the first game. Benfica’s squad includes veteran players, Nicolas Otamendi and Jan Vertonghen in the back. Local talent Diogo Goncalves is in the midfield along with new signings Joao Mario and French Soualiho Meite. While in front Swiss Haris Seferovic and Uruguayan Darwin Nunez can play the key part. Not a bad line-up for sue.

The Primeira Liga Betting: The Chances of Porto and Sporting

Benfica’s main rivals, FC Porto have a strong squad as well, especially in the attacking part. Iranian Mehdi Taremi is one of the best players in the league, who scored 16 goals last season. Jesus Corona, Luis Diaz, and Francisco Conceicao can also assist the attacks. While a real legend, Pepe captains the team. Porto’s manager, Sergio Conceicao is another asset of the club, who can lead the team to another trophy. Even though he has been facing criticism from the fans for not bringing young talents to the main team. Porto had a promising pre-season, even defeating the French champions, Lille 2-0. Now their odds to win the Primeira Liga are 2.37 in the 2021/22 Portugal League winner odds.

It is only worth considering one more club for the title, last year’s winners, Sporting Lisbon. Online gambling sites in Portugal offer the odds of 4.33 for their successful title defense. This won’t be easy despite almost every key player staying at the club including several young talents. Their manager, Ruben Amorim is also very young, still only 36. His new approach seems to be very successful so far. He brought the first title for the club after 2002, ending a 19-year long drought. But due to their title win, a very busy schedule is waiting for the team with at least six games in the Champions League group stage. Nuno Mendes and Sebastien Coates in the back, Paulinho and Nuno Santos in the front can help the team to more success in the new season.
