The first Alfred Dunhill Links Championship was held in 2001 as a replacement for the previous Alfred Dunhill Cup. The new tournament has a pro-am format, with teams of one professional and one amateur player competing. Of course, there is a professional event as well with some of the best golf players taking part in it. We can find Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer, and Tyrrell Hatton as the previous tournament winners. While Danny Willett is the defending champion. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is played on three different links courses, Carnoustie, Kingsbarns, and the Old Course, at St Andrews in Fife. And it belongs among the richest tournaments on the European Tour explaining its huge popularity.

Rory McIlroy will make his third appearance in the 2022 European Tour where he has a second and fourth-place finish so far. The world No2 also won three events in the 2021/22 PGA Tour, including the season-ending Tour Championship. So McIlroy will arrive in great form and probably in good spirits after he will join his father in the pro-am team. He finished as a runner-up three times so far at this tournament. But the four-time major champion has a more recent memory from the Old Course after finishing third at the 2022 Open Championship. Now online sportsbooks in the UK favor him to win with an odds of 5.50. But several other players will aim for victory including the 2022 US Open winner Matthew Fitzpatrick. The 28-year-old English player is currently in second place in the DP World Tour behind McIlroy. He finished second in the DS Automobiles Italian Open two weeks ago and T6 at the Scottish Open. His odds to win this week are 12.00 in the 2022 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship odds. The same odds are offered for the victory of the 2019 Open Championship winner Shane Lowry.  He finished T3 at the 2022 Masters and won his sixth European Tour title at the BMW PGA Championship three weeks ago. So the 35-year-old Irish player is in great form and can do well again.

Former event winners and other favorites

Tyrrell Hatton loves this tournament and has already won it twice before, in 2016 and 2017. And he also finished twice as a runner-up. But he hasn’t won any tournament since his last victory at the 2021 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. Hatton’s best result this season has been a T4 finish at the Dubai Desert Classic at the beginning of the year. But he can get a good result again in one of his favorite tournaments. Online gambling sites in the UK offer an odds of 17.00 for his third title here.  Another two-time winner of this championship is Padraig Harrington who won here in 2002 and 2006. The 51-year-olf Irish player is a three-time major champion who plays in the PGA Tour Champions circle now. With an odds of 126.00 to win here again. We can find much lower odds for the victory of the defending champion, Danny Willett. The winner of the 2016 Masters Tournament got his eighth European Tour title here. While his best result this season has been a T8 finish at the Omega European Masters last month. His odds to win now are 36.00.  Even though Tommy Fleetwood hasn’t won this tournament yet, he already finished twice as a runner-up. He also finished T4 at the 2022 Open Championship, so has a good record in this course. And the odds of 21.00 to get his sixth European Tour title. Fans can also hope for a good result from a local favorite, Robert MacIntyre. He got his second ET win at the Italian Open this month and finished T8 at the Cazoo Open de France last week. Making him one of the best-form players in the field, who has an odds of 34.00 to win at bet365.
