The last Grand Tour of the season, 2022 Vuelta a Espana starts this Friday, on the 19th of August, from the Dutch city of Utrecht. The three-week race will conclude in Madrid, on the 11th of September.

Primoz Roglic is the three-time defending champion and is mentioned as the top favorite by the 2022 Vuelta winner odds again. But we can find other top cyclists like Remco Evenepoel, Richard Carapaz, and Jai Hindley in the field, who can all challenge the Slovenian for the overall title.

This year’s Vuelta a Espana will begin in the Netherlands with the country hosting the first three stages of the three-week race. The first stage will be a team time trial which might shake up the usual order. With an individual time trial also in the race, we might see an even more exciting competition than in the previous years. Since 2019 Primoz Roglic has been dominating the event and will try to win again this year.

The only concern is his recent injury after his fall in the Tour de France. Two other previous winners, Simon Yates and Nairo Quintana will also be on the field. Along with the 2019 Giro d’Italia winner Richard Carapaz and the current Giro champion, Jai Hindley. Not to mention other young stars like Remco Evenepoel and Joao Almeida who are also contenders for the overall title.

2022 Vuelta Winner Odds Still Favor Roglic Ahead of His Main Rivals

Primoz Roglic has already won the Vuelta in the last three years. But the Jumbo-Visma rider will try to win the red jersey for the fourth time this year. He is super-strong and perfectly suited for the mountain stages of the race. The only question is if he has fully recovered from the back injury that he suffered in the Tour de France a month ago. Online sportsbooks in Spain still consider him the biggest favorite and offer the odds of 2.89 for his victory.

Well, if the Slovenian is 100%, it will be very difficult to beat him for sure. But there are several candidates who will try that. The 2022 Vuelta winner odds mention Remco Evenepoel as his biggest rival who has the odds of 6.00 to win the red jersey.

The 22-year-old Quick-Step rider is one of the biggest talents in the sport. He has already won one-day classics like the 2022 Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Clasica de San Sebastian this year. But the Belgian hasn’t finished any Grand Tour yet. And he has been inconsistent on longer races. Another young but already successful rider is Jai Hindley, the winner of this year’s Giro d’Italia.

The 26-year-old Australian managed to beat several current contenders in Italy. But winning the Giro and the Vuelta in the same year is a very tough mission. It happened last time in 2008 thanks to Alberto Contador. Hinley will be supported by a strong Bora team, his win would still be a surprise. Though his odds to do so are not bad at 6.80.

Carapaz, Yates, and Almeida in Other Favorites

Richard Carapaz was close to winning his second Giro d’Italia title this season. But he could only finish as a runner-up at the end. The Ecuadorian was also second in 2020 Vuelta a Espana and at this year’s Volta a Catalunya. Last year he couldn’t finish the Spanish Grand Tour though. While he lost this year’s Giro title on the final mountain stage. When he just couldn’t keep pace with Hindley.

Now Carapaz can try again to win a Grand Tour with the support of his strong Ineos teammates. Like the 2020 Giro winner, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Carlos Rodriguez, and Ethan Hayter. His odds to win the overall title are 9.40.

Online gambling sites in Spain also mention the 2018 Vuelta winner, Simon Yates among the favorites. The British cyclist won two stages in this year’s Giro d’Italia. But he didn’t finish the race due to knee pain. He was second in the 2022 Paris-Nice and 6th in the Clasica de San Sebastian but couldn’t perform his best in longer races. Now the Team BikeExchange rider’s odds to get back to winning are 11.50. Similar odds are offered for the overall win of 24-year-old Portuguese Joao Almeida.

He finished fourth in the 2020 Giro d’Italia. He was in the same position this year when he had to abandon the race. Almeida is a great climber and time-trialist. And he will be supported by a strong UAE team including Marc Soler, Brandon McNulty, and Pascal Ackermann. Increasing his chances of winning his first Grand Tour title.
