Hollywood star Matthew McConaughey has not formally entered the Texas gubernatorial election race. However, he has given it true consideration. So, will McConaughey eventually step on the stage as a politician, or he will keep his leadership role out of politics? Who will he challenge? Does he have a real chance of winning? Here is all you need to know before betting on McConaughey to be Texas governor. Just recently Texas native Matthew McConaughey said at The Balanced Voice podcast that a potential bid to govern the state of Texas in the 2022 election was “a true consideration”. His comment has prompted many online sportsbooks in the United States to offer exciting odds on McConaughey’s chances of running and winning next year. However, it was not the first time McConaughey dropped such an idea to the public. He said in November at The Late Shaw, when he was asked by the host Stephen Colbert on whether he will run for governor of Texas: “I have been asked that question if I have been considering running for governor quite a bit lately and I have always given the same answer. But, evidently one of them came out as I would consider it as I did not say absolutely no.”

So, apparently, the intentions are there. But, is that sufficient to bet on McConaughey to be Texas governor? Well, we should look into the polls! Besides, we need to see his chances against the top candidates that will possibly also run in 2022.

McConaughey is kicking off well as per the UT Tyler poll

Even though the actor did not enter the race yet, he has been the frontrunner in a poll conducted by the University of Texas very lately, according to NME. The poll indicates that 45 percent of the respondents would vote for McConaughey. Whereas, the incumbent governor Greg Abbott will likely get only 33 percent of the vote. The numbers look very promising for McConaughey. One reason is likely his name recognition as a beloved actor. The other reason is him being a centrist. So, he has a good ground to approach people on both ends of the spectrum. Therefore to bet on McConaughey to be Texas governor stands at +4000 odds as per 22BET Sportsbook.

Bet on McConaughey to be Texas governor against Abbott and O’Rourke

Should McConaughey announce he is running at +950, he will run primarily against the incumbent governor Greg Abbott. The Republican governor Abbott has been serving since 2015. He is certainly up for re-election. Should he win it will be his third term in office. Abbott is so far the man to beat with -227 odds.

The other candidate to possibly run is Beto O’Rourke of the Democrats. He represented Texas’s 16th congressional district in the House until 2019. He challenged Sen. Ted Cruz in 2018. It was very close but he lost the battle. O'Rourke is very popular, charismatic, and a fundraising whiz. His chances of winning are +332. Obviously, a possible race against the Republican Abbott and the Democrat O’Rourke will be very tough for McConaughey.
