Betsson and Spelinstitutet start 10-week self-help program for players with gambling problems in the Nordic countries

Betsson and Spelinstitutet are commencing together a pilot study about responsible gaming, sources at the Swedish gambling news reported. The aim of the study is to create therapeutic solution for players with gambling problems.

Spelinstitutet is a Swedish company that delivers innovative gaming solutions among others for online casinos in Sweden. The company also strongly focuses on the worldwide market, especially Northern Europe.

Betsson has a long standing commitment towards responsible gaming. The company offers online sportsbooks in Sweden as well as Finland, Norway, Iceland, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Denmark, Serbia and the Netherlands in Europe, and Peru in South-America. In most of the countries they also operate online poker and casino sites.

Betsson also has a legal case fought in the courts of European Union. The company opened its first land betting shop in Stockholm in May 2008, challenging the Swedish state gambling monopoly granted for the government by the Swedish gambling laws.

Players of Betsson’s Betsafe brand volunteered to take part during an initial pilot study from the Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland. The gamblers take part in an online based 10-week self-help program, based on cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing concepts. The results of the program will be used to further develop responsible gambling solutions and gaming therapies.

Thomas Nilsson, CEO, of Spelinstitutet emphasizes: „Betsson is a leading online gambling operator, its work in the area of responsible gaming can be expected to have a positive impact and help drive responsible gaming tools development further.”

Betsson CEO Magnus Silfverberg added: “We are primarily interested in contributing to the development of preventative tools that would prevent or limit the harmful effects of gambling. This is why we see an excellent fit between the online self-help tool developed by Spelinstitutet and Betsson’s plan for responsible gaming development.”
