Local authorities have arrested and questioned Irish football player Stephen Dawson, suspecting him for involvement in a betting scandal.

At the moment, 28 year-old Dawson is filling in as captain of Barnsley Football Club after Martin Cranie was injured. But the Irish player was recently arrested and questioned by the police, and later released on bail.

There has been no official announcement regarding the reasons for his arrest, but it is believed that Dawson may have been implicated in the spot-fixing probe that has also affected League One football club Preston North End.

Six footballers involved in match-fixing?

Six sportsmen playing for the football club - John Welsh, Keith Keane, Bailey Wright David Buchanan, Ben Davies and Graham Cummins - have recently been placed under arrest, after authorities suspected they broke British gambling laws by fixing a part of a match, in order to influence the outcome of the game.

Despite these accusations, Preston North End announced in a statement that all six football players are available for selection. Dawson’s team has also released a statement, but only to say that club officials refuse to make any comments at this point.

The scandal broke out last December, when an undercover reporter allegedly heard from footballer Sam Sodje that he could arrange for players to get yellow cards, in exchange for money.
