And now for something completely different: William Hill began its campaign to promote its online sportsbook in Austria yesterday with its new series of TV commercials entitled “Wetten wie die Briten” (“Bet like the British.”)

The first two television spots feature some clever witticisms about football and William Hill sportsbook from Cleese all in seemingly passable German – and he manages not to mention the war. “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” in their television heyday once produced about an hour’s worth of material for German TV in which Cleese also extensively performed in German.

The campaign will promote William Hill’s new online gambling site in Austria, reportedly the product of months of R&D work, with its emphasis on Austrian Bundesliga football. Seeking to become the sports betting leader in Austria, the website offers from dozens to over 100 markets on each game plus in-game live betting for Bundesliga matches.

Though operation of foreign-owned poker rooms, sportsbooks and online casinos in Austria is forbidden without establishing a base of operations in the country, but the European Court of Justice recently ruled Austrian gambling laws unfair to European competition.
The Austrian sports betting market is estimated by industry experts to be worth about €110 million.
