Lip’s Odds Job – Gambling Scenes In Shameless
S7, E4 (“I Am a Storm”)
Lip received a new internship at a tech company, but the whale operation seems fishy. Turns out, they are running an illegal gambling business. Lip’s job is to re-route all the IP to a country where gambling is legal whenever the regulators come for inspection. Lip then distracts the company to steal iPods, which he then sells later to help Fiona. This episode has a great and interesting storyline. Fans can enjoy the wholesome sacrifice Lip makes for his family.
Furthermore, it can create talks and debates on fan forums. Because this is a point where we see Lip picking his family in a shameless manner, after realizing his job is essentially illegal. Therefore, we see how Lip’s spiraling down to Frank’s path is caused by not only his family environment, but also the general environment where he tries to get employed and be on the right track. Casino Bus Robbery
S7, E10 (“Ride or Die”)
Out of all the gambling scenes in Shameless, we’d re-watch this one anytime! This is one of the funniest and most characteristic scenes from Shameless. Frank tries to rob a casino with Monica but fails. Then, they find a casino bus full of old people who will be transported to a casino to play bets. They decide to team up with Neil, a guy in a wheelchair, to fake the bus hitting him. Then, they get on the bus, and use a gun to get people’s betting money, drive the bus into a car, leave, and help him escape the angry bus driver.
However, when they return home, Debbie intimidates them into paying Neil his cut ($1000) and then kicks them out of the house. According to Hotard, these buses still operate, so fans of the show might want to try one of these rides someday! This is a fun scene, where Frank does one of the most unhinged things he has ever done, which is pointing a gun at a bunch of strangers in a bus. Moments like these made the show iconic.
The Hobo Games – Gambling Scenes In Shameless
S9, E11 (“The Hobo Games”)
Frank enters the Hobo Games, hoping to earn the first-place prize, which is $50,000. His friend Mikey O’Shea is also competing with him. While not an actual gambling game, this evokes the same feeling we get from watching the Squid Game. What makes this episode one of the best moments on our list is the several layers of societal and actual gambling. First, Frank participates in a series of strange gambling games, hoping to earn money from The Hobo Games. On the other hand, Ingrid tests Frank’s care for making a family with her, and ultimately loses.
We all love an episode where Frank does not end up winning anything, yet he risks everything. Truly, it captures the essence of Shameless. And while we are not celebrating a man’s suffering, at the same time? This is one moment out of the thousands of reasons leading to the show’s final scene. These are the moments adding up to the character whose ending is strange, weird, shameless, yet still perfect.
Poker For Lunch
S4, E2 (“My Oldest Daughter”)
During a short scene, we can see Lip winning in card games. He is sitting at work, playing poker to win food. His co-workers lost a bet to him, and he took some food, wishing them good luck for the next time. When they ask why he is leaving, he says he is going to study for a test that happens in 15 minutes. So why did we decide to put this scene among the best gambling scenes in Shameless? See, when it comes to the Gallaghers, they tend to gamble a lot, especially Frank. Lip is walking down the path of Frank, and these are some of the foreshadowings of his personality adapting to Frank’s reward-chasing personality.
He has a test in 15 minutes, yet he spends his time playing poker for simple food at his job. He ultimately prefers to take the social glory and fine joys of life over pushing through his final year in school. In fact, Frank is also over-confident in himself, as you will see in the next scene we’ll talk about. Lip being confident with just 15 minutes of studying clearly shows as an inherited personality trait from Frank.
A Shocking Bet – Gambling Scenes In Shameless
S2, E1 (“Summertime”)
Frank is sitting in a bar when he overhears a man called Baby bragging about being tased twice. He then bets $10,000 on him lying and gets Kevin to taser him twice in the chest. Frank loses the bet and now owes $10,000 to Baby. As a result, Baby kidnaps Liam as collateral for the $10,000. Frank starts selling drugs and performing oral sex on strangers at a gay bar to buy Liam back. Finally, Fiona pays Baby with Kev and Veronica’s marijuana to cover the rest of Frank’s debt. According to Reddit, some people can actually tolerate the pain from a taser, making this scene even more iconic. The whole scene is a brilliant starting point to a chaotic situation.
Eventually, all of the characters’ troubles are lining up to one singular point: To fix the shit caused by Frank Gallagher himself. The whole episode is just fun, energetic, and has the right amount of suspense. Furthermore, we can also see Frank’s good father side, trying to earn his son back by any means necessary. When we debate the characters on different online platforms, many acknowledge that Frank is a terrible father. Yet, moments like these give us reasons to also love him, beneath the many layers of deadbeat failures.
The Unforgettable Casino Game
S5, E4 (“A Night to Remem… Wait, What?”)
Finally, the best out of all gambling scenes in Shameless! The hungover Frank wakes up on a bench with no memory of the past day. Then, he goes to visit Lou Deckner to pick up his six-figure insurance settlement. However, Lou reveals he already got it yesterday. Since he can not remember the day, he decides to try to find where the money went. Soon, Frank discovers that he spent $1,000 on the Alibi Room, then bought an expensive Porsche. Then, he visits Chinatown to finally realize that he gambled his cash in Pai Gow.
However, the bouncer reveals he actually doubled his money, and left with three women for a hotel. Turns out, Frank not only spent all of his cash, but also ran over a hotel valet. To settle the medical bills, Frank is forced to give his Porsche away. According to IMDb, this is in the top 50 highest-rated episodes ever. In shows, episodes with a strong theme will always be among the best. The whole episode of chasing a memory reminded us of “My Name is Earl,” and it was clearly effective.
