Mika Häkkinen made his Formula 1 debut with Team Lotus in 1991, where he stayed until the end of 1992. In 1992, he scored 11 points and finished 8th in the Standings. Then, he joined McLaren as a test driver in 1993 but was promoted to a race driver after Michael Andretti left F1. At his first GP with McLaren, he out-qualified Ayrton Senna at Estoril and secured his seat with the team for the 1994 season. In the final race of 1995, he suffered a terrible crash that almost cost him his life, but luckily, he was saved by F1’s famous doctor Sid Watkins.
McLaren and World Championships
Häkkinen’s most successful years were with McLaren, where he formed a successful partnership with David Coulthard. He was unlucky not to win a Grand Prix at first, though he had been on the way to do so on multiple occasions. He eventually won his first GP at the 1997 European Grand Prix, where Schumacher attempted to put Villeneuve out of the race to win the title. He dominated the first part of the season and such a good start and gap that he built was enough to take the title despite a shaky second half. Mika Häkkinen started 2001 with the prospect of winning the title back, but it did not last long. After the first three races, he did not have the same motivation as before.
