These days they run the second leg of the Stayer’s Triple Crown on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood. It’s the highlight of the first of five days of fabulous racing in Sussex. First, run back in 1812 those who like to bet on sports in the UK often see this as a great little flutter. This year they’ll delight in the thrill of watching to see if Stradivarius can win for a fifth time in a row. Or, perhaps, seeing its luck run out. That’s why it isn’t the only bet on the Goodwood Cup at Bet365.

No horse wins forever. Well okay. So some manage it. They go a whole career undefeated like the Hungarian filly Kincsem. In the main, however, most aren’t so fortunate, or talented. So, at some point Stradivarius is going to stop winning this race. Sure, once again it gets very short odds on the Goodwood Cup, but can it really do it again? Maybe. But, two miles is a long way. You have to bet on the Goodwood Cup taking quite a toll on this now legendary seven year old.

Naturally, as time goes on the odds on Stradivarius have also become a tradition. Those who regularly bet on horse racing in the UK know it of old. We would all find it quite strange if it wasn’t the favorite bet on the Goodwood Cup. Online betting sites in the UK like Bet365 have to take into account the win at Ascot back in April, but then that rather lackluster run in June. Did that signpost the Stradivarius era ending? Can another horse win the Goodwood Cup this time?

Has The Era Of Stradivarius Come And Gone?

Well it’s certainly more likely now than ever before. Sure, Mekong at 100/1 probably isn’t the wager you’re looking for. In horse racing odds terms that’s outlandish in this race. Whether you believe King of the Castle at 50/1 is any more likely to even place is up to you. Most won’t go for it. Nor will they choose Away He Goes, when they can get last year’s 2nd place finisher, Nayef Road, at the same 40/1 price for their bet on the Goodwood Cup. There are far better offerings.

Bet On The 2021 Goodwood Cup

  • Mekong – 100/1
  • King of the Castle – 50/1
  • Nayef Road – 40/1
  • Away He Goes – 40/1
  • Amhran Na Bhfiann – 25/1
  • Passion – 20/1
  • Serpentine – 20/1
  • Emperor of the Sun – 20/1
  • Santiago – 12/1
  • Sir Ron Priestley – 7/1
  • Trueshan – 6/1
  • Spanish Mission – 4/1
  • Stradivarius – 8/11

Amhran Ma Bhfiann rocks up at 25/1 but whilst it’s done well over a mile and six, over two its record isn’t so great. That’s why Emperor of the Sun, Serpentine, and Passion all get shorter 20/1 odds. Online sportsbook sites in the UK like Bet365 thus save up the more interesting prices for better mounts. Indeed whilst you might want to plump for one of the outlying runners each way as a little flutter, if you’re picking a winner your bet on the Goodwood Cup needs more thought.

Santiago gets 12/1 and is no slouch. Sure, its not won since last year and not over this distance, but it’s still a strong goer. Meanwhile Sir Ron Priestley gets a more comfortable 7/1 and arrives fresh off the back of a win at Newmarket. Sure, you can bet on the Goodwood Cup being more of a challenge but it’s one it could meet. As could Trueshan who is 6/1 and far more comfy going over two miles. It won over this distance back in October last year at Ascot. But the real rival?

The Goodwood Cup

  • Date – July 27th, 2021
  • Location – W. Sussex, UK
  • Course – Goodwood Racecourse
  • Distance – 2 miles
  • Orientation – Either
  • Surface – Turf
  • Qualification – 3yrs+
  • Purse – £250,000

Well Spanish Mission gets 4/1, the nearest price for a bet on the Goodwood Cup to the 8/11 the bookies give Stradivarius. That’s as good as the Goodwood Cup odds get this year for those who believe Stradivarius will come a cropper. Sure, you could go each-way, but honestly, after the year we’ve had? Anyone taking advantage of UK gambling laws for a little flutter on this one at Bet365 should really just lump it on the nose. After all, five wins in a row? Just too many, right?
