The Turner Prize is an annual award to four artists under the age of 50 either born or live in Britain, for an exceptional exhibition of their work in the previous year. This year, the committee had abolished one of the rules and placed a bet on Hurvin Anderson (2/1), aged 52.

The decision was made facing the outstanding pieces of art by Anderson, an MA painting graduate from the Royal College of Art in London. His art works, according to many critics, “depict places where memory and history converge and engage with issues of identity”.

Hurvin Anderson’s paintings proved to be worth a bet

Anderson has been causing quite a stir during this auction season and the lots garnered record-breaking interest. His painting “Peter’s Series: Back” sold for more than $2 at Phillips on October 6th. That is not it! The same evening, at Christe’s, another painting “Country Club: Chicken Wire” established a new record with nearly $3.2 million.

“Is it OK to be Black?” is the title of Hurvin Anderson’s painting is in the exhibition this year after having guaranteed him a place among the Turner Prize contestants.
