Mounting discord against possible backroom deals to ban some forms of online gambling puts casino mogul Adelson in the hot seat.

A heated debate is now on as casino Mogul Sheldon Adelson seeks to get legislation which will outlaw online gambling in the US. The Restoration of America’s Wire Act is being supported and paid for by Adelson who vehemently opposes online gambling. He is the owner of several land casinos in Nevada and Macau.

However, opposition is growing to stamp out Adelson’s attempt. He has come under a surge of attacks from businesses, social groups and political parties. Groups supporting online gambling in the US include the land casinos of Atlantic City and the Casino Association of New Jersey.

The Casino Association of New Jersey is lobbying for Bally’s, Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Caesars Atlantic City, Harrah’s Resort AC, Resorts Casino Hotel and Tropicana Casino, which are all located in Atlantic City.

Violation of the tenth Amendment

The Casino Association of New Jersey says that under the tenth Amendment, each state implements and regulates gambling policies within their borders. Therefore, by having the bill pass in what seems to be “shady backroom deals”, Adelson and his cohorts in Congress would be violating the tenth Amendment right.

The Association further claims that under the current US gambling law which is quite acrimonious and adequate, measures are taken to ensure that the internet betting in the US does not become a playground for criminals and kids. The operators also have to respect the standards of technology and finance.

By passing a bill to deter and prevent online gambling it would result in a loss of millions of dollars’ worth of investments, lower tax revenues for the state and increase unemployment. The online gaming business also allows for the development of technology by creating new software.
