The History of the Dundee Derby

Dundee Derby factoid!
  • Dundee United's supporters are known as “the Arab’s" thank to the team having a very sandy pitch back in the 1960s!
This weekend sees Dundee (the “Dees”) play Dundee United (the “Terrors”) for the 177th time. Their first game was over 90 years ago, and the rivalry still divides a city today! Both teams have a proud history: they’ve both reached the semi-finals of the European Cup and Dundee United even boast the world’s only 100% record against Barcelona. They’ve played the Catalan giants four times in European Competition, and won each match! If you bet on sports in Spain, you’ll know how crazy a stat this is!

They also have a history of exciting matches against each other. Beating United was an important step on the way to Dundee’s only league title victory in 1962. Later, when Dundee United won their only title in 1983, it was clinched away at Dens Park. In the early 2000s, big spending Dundee had a brief spell of dominance, thanks to international stars like Argentinean International Claudio Caniggia and Georgian captain Georgi Nemsadze.

However, for the last decade the Arabs have been firmly on top. Since Dundee were promoted in 2012, United have won seven derbies, while Dundee have only won two. In fact, the Dees haven’t won away to United since 2004. One last important fact: their stadiums, Dundee’s Den’s Park and United’s Tannadice Park are just 250 yards apart, making them the two closest football stadiums in Europe!

Dundee derby odds on to decide United’s fate

If you bet on sports in the UK, you’ll that this Sunday’s match has even more significance than usual, however. Dundee have had a good season, and are in contention for a top six finish. United, though, are at the bottom of the table, 8 points behind 11th place Kilmarnock. If they lose, that could make it too tough a task for them to catch up.

United, who have been managed by club legend Mixu Paatelainen since October, have recently had a decent run of form, while Dundee haven’t had a league win in a month. According to online sportsbooks, Dundee derby odds are in United’s favour: they are 2.38 (69/50) to win. Certain players seem to have an affinity with this fixture, though neither of the current squads have anybody close to Paul Sturrock’s record of 14 derby goals. Dundee’s Greg Stewart has scored in three of the last five and he is 2.75 (7/4) to score anytime. Dundee United’s young star Blair Spittal, meanwhile, has actually scored in the last three derbies. He is 11.00 (10/1) to score first.
