Online Poker in Switzerland

As poker was considered a game of chance in Switzerland for a long time, it was illegal to play the game. But between 1993 and 1998, the gaming legislation changed. And some years later, the Swiss Federal Gaming Board (SFGB) qualified certain poker tournaments as games of skill, which allowed the organization of these events outside of casinos, as long as there was the canton’s approval.

However, according to online poker news sites in Switzerland, the Supreme Court ruled in 2010 that Texas Hold’em was a game of luck, rather than a game of skill. This decision led to a restriction of poker rooms across the country, as only casinos were able to host tournaments - though private tournaments can still take place. Now, under similar restrictions, nationals can also play in online poker sites in Switzerland

Online Poker Laws in Switzerland

Until 2019, all forms of online gambling in Switzerland were illegal, though international operators were still able to target Swiss players and the law didn’t enforce any penalty to those willing to play in online poker sites. However, since January of that year, that online gambling became legal under the Money Gaming Act

The new law strictly restricted the organization of online games to Swiss operators only. The only exceptions are under Article 18, that states that it is possible to collaborate with a foreign company, but only if it proves to have a “good reputation” and under the SFGB supervision. This is the case of PokerStars that, while it had to cease its online casino operations, it is still able to offer its poker platform to Swiss players.

Online Poker Payment Methods in Switzerland

As operators are willing to continue providing their services to players in the country, they need to be sure that gamblers are having access to safe platforms. This means that the only payment methods available have a proven record of transparency. In this way, the credit and debit cards of VISA and MasterCard are fully available. But there are also alternatives such as Skrill, Neteller or PaySafeCard. For more information, consult the online poker reviews site
