Sports Betting in New Zealand
The New Zealand Racing Board (NZRB) oversees all sports betting in New Zealand. The primary provider of NZRB services is a group called TAB (Totalizator Agency Board) which operates in both New Zealand and Australia. TAB currently holds a monopoly over all sports betting in the country. They provide both standard fixed-odds sports betting as well as wagers on horse races, covering most of New Zealand's fifty tracks.
TAB offers their services in a number of different ways. A huge network of high-street betting shops is the primary way for players to place sports bets in New Zealand. TAB's street front venues form one of the country's largest retail networks. TAB also runs a national chain of Phonebet call centres that let punters place wagers over the phone. Phonebet handles more operator-assisted calls than any other call centre in New Zealand.
Online Sports Betting in New Zealand
TAB is also authorized to offer their betting services over the internet to players in New Zealand. In fact, TAB is one of the only two organizations licensed to offer online gambling in New Zealand. The other one is the New Zealand Lotteries Commission which runs a series of lottery games both online and offline.
No other sportsbooks are authorized to enter the sports betting market in New Zealand. During the early 2000's, Betfair tried very hard to make a name for themselves in the country, but after many years of dispute they were driven off. Interestingly, it is not currently illegal for New Zealanders to gamble at websites located offshore, so many players in the country simply use large, international online sportsbooks for their sports betting needs.
