Bahrain GP predictions after Practice 1

The tests have shown that there weren’t a lot of changes in the hierarchy of Formula 1 teams over the winter. It seems that the top teams remain at the top while others will have to play catch-up. The only team that lost its momentum is Alpine, judging from tests and the first practice session. Unexpectedly, the French team seems to have built a volatile car in all types of corners, as well as lacking max speed. If not for HAAS’s terrible form during the tests, Alpine would be last overall.

Ricciardo of RB topped the first practice session on the softest tires C3. This resulted in Ricciardo setting the fastest lap time of the session. However, what was even more noteworthy was the RB’s competitiveness on this tire compared to the McLaren. The McLaren seemed challenging to handle in slow-speed corners. Considering that the 2023 AlphaTauri evolved into what McLaren regarded as the top-performing car in slow-speed corners by the end of last season, could RB pose a real challenge to McLaren on a track where McLaren traditionally struggled? This is a trend worth keeping an eye on for sure.

Removing everyone who showed their best times and softest tires will get us an order of Red Bull, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Ferrari, and McLaren. The order is built based on the teams’ times on medium tires C2. This implies that Mercedes and Aston Martin may be more competitive than their testing performances indicated, while Ferrari and McLaren may be less so. Exciting is the fact that Fernando Alonso topped the second half of the session amongst drivers who were on C2 tires. This looks good for Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso, although it’s important to note that Alonso’s fastest time was achieved late in the session, unlike those set by Verstappen and George Russell. Alonso also utilized a fresh set of tires for his best lap.

Ferrari’s lap times were slightly later than Mercedes’ and Verstappen’s, but both drivers seemed more at ease in the latter part of the session. Sergio Perez posted his best lap even earlier than Verstappen’s. Still, considering track conditions improving, there seemed to be some compression in the front of the field, especially on the medium tire. Verstappen expressed dissatisfaction with his car’s handling during the initial runs and reported issues with gearshifts. He completed fewer laps than others at the top of the timesheet. It’s also worth noting the struggles of Alpine, which appeared to be the slowest team (excluding Haas, which focused on long runs) among those attempting proper lap times on the medium compound tire.
